The Journey of the Assassins
Chapter 2:
"Mission Objectives."
The two humans continued to stand on the beach in silence, waiting for Jake and Shirelia to return. All that could be heard was the crashing waves and the whispering wind, as Matt continued thinking to himself and as Sonny remained motionless.
"Anyway, what exactly is on that scroll?" Matt suddenly questioned, breaking up the silence as he looked down at the silver object in Sonny's left hand.
Sonny then glanced down at his own hand. "I don't know. Writing of some sort, I would assume. That is what scrolls are designed for." Sonny grabbed it with his other hand and prepared to open the scroll. "Let's find out," he said.
"I don't think you should do that, Sonny." Matt seemed nervous.
"Why not?" He questioned his friend, as he kept his eyes and grip locked on the silver and gold scroll. "You're the one who asked what was on it."
"Yeah, but I think we should wait for Jake and that creature to get here," Matt said rubbing the back of his neck. "From what I've seen occur so far today, who knows what might happen when you open that thing."
Sonny looked over at Matt, but kept both his hands on the golden ends of the scroll. "That's what makes it exciting. And besides, this whole thing probably is some sort of dream. What could possibly happen that would be so bad?" He looked back down at it and, ignoring Matt's warning, started to slowly open it. Matt took a step back, but stood on his tiptoes to try and get a peek at what was on the scroll. His feet slightly sunk into the sand, making it harder for him to see over Sonny's left shoulder. After what seemed like an eternity, the scroll was completely opened, revealing a map about two feet by two feet in size. "A map, huh?" Sonny questioned, as he looked on at the black ink drawing of what appeared to be an island. The silver colored paper of the scroll seemed ancient, and the map looked like the one someone would see on a great treasure hunt. It blew gently in the wind, making a slight rippling noise.
Matt slowly moved closer. "Really?"
"Yeah," Sonny responded, as he quickly turned and faced Matt, who jumped back a couple of feet. "What you are afraid of? It's just paper." Matt moved in again, as Sonny turned the map so that his friend could see it better. Matt flinched again, but Sonny didn't notice. "Looks to be a map of that island over there," Sonny concluded, as he glanced over at the large island and back down at the map.
Matt stared at the map intently, and then too looked over at the large island. "You know, I think you're right," he finally commented. He peered once more at the map. "Yeah, you are right. Look, there's the waterfall and there's that tall mountain. It's a perfect match." He pointed to the objects on the map and then to the real ones on the island.
"No doubt about it," Sonny added, as he looked at the tall mountain which reached into the clouds. He then glanced back down at the map. "But how in the world is this going to help us get off the island? I mean, the map only shows the island. It doesn't show any ports, cities, or nothing like that." A few moments passed, as Sonny continued to look at the map. "There is some writing on it, however, like right here."
"Where?" Matt questioned, as he looked on with Sonny at the map.
"There," Sonny responded, as he pointed his finger at what appeared to be a drawing of a small opening surrounded by hills. Matt glanced to where his friend was pointing. Sonny then moved the map closer to himself, blocking his friend's view of it. "'Wind Whispering Meadows', huh? Sounds pretty neat."
Matt looked over at the island and then back to Sonny. "Yeah, it does sound pretty cool. Is that what it says?"
"Sure enough," Sonny replied. "And it's not too far from here." A few moments passed. "There's a lot of writing on here now that I look at it. This island looks to be packed with places. I still don't see any cities and what not, though."
