Chloe Lukasiak admired her reflection in her bedroom mirror. Her long blonde hair was perfectly curled, with a black rose tucked neatly behind her ear. Her winged eyeliner was perfectly even on both sides, winged so sharply it could even make her soulful brown eyes look intimidating. She carefully reapplied her bloodred lipstick, a signature colour she would never get tired of.
"Chloe! Hurry up already! We're gonna be late!" Clara whined, knocking on Chloe's bedroom door.
Chloe sighed. "Coming!"
She heard Clara's footsteps thunder down the stairs- seriously, how loud could that kid stomp?- and stepped back to admire her outfit one last time. Her red leather jacket complimented her lipstick, and a tight black crop top brought the bold contrast. Chloe turned around, admiring the rips in her black skinny jeans.
"Chloe! We're leaving without you!"
Chloe gave her hair one last toss, scampering down the stairs in her socked feet. She grabbed her Noir Louis Vuitton tote and slipped on her black knee high boots, grabbing her phone from the charging dock beside the door.
She slid into the passenger seat of her mother's white Ford minivan.
Clara whined. "Chloe, you're going to make me late AGAIN!"
Christi quickly started the car. "Chlo, we're going to the elementary school first this time. Clara deserves to be on time today."
"Whatever." Chloe muttered. It didn't matter, she had English first period anyways and her teacher, Ms. Thomas, was one of the most boring people she'd ever met.
She slid on her sunglasses. Even though it wasn't sunny, it was an embarrassment to be seen in her mother's clunky minivan. She always got dropped off two blocks away from the school in order to avoid being seen with it.
She checked her phone to see fourteen unread messages. She clicked on the first. It was Paige Hyland, her partner- in- crime and best friend.
PAIGE: chlobird what r u wearing today
PAIGE: where are u
PAIGE: r u coming 2 school today?
PAIGE: ms thomas giving us an essay proj. ughhhh
Chloe sighed, glancing at the time on her phone. It was already 7:52. As they pulled up to the elementary school, Clara hopped out and ran into the building. The elementary school start time was 8:00, but the high school start time was 7:45.
She decided to respond to Paige's messages.
CHLOE: oml so late today :(
It was fine to show up late to a party or a hangout, but showing up late to class was a big no-no. You would have to go to the office and fill out a late slip and the teacher would berate you. Nothing that Chloe couldn't handle, of course, but it was way too much effort for one late.
She swiped to the next conversation. It was Maddie, her other best friend.
MADDIE: you better not be late today
MADDIE: chloe we have to talk about paiges birthday
MADDIE: omg i'm going to have to start giving you a wake up call lol
Christi cleared her throat. "We're here. Get out, Chlo."
Chloe sighed and shouldered her bag, heading towards the school. She walked into the office and filled out a late slip, tossing it at the secretary.
Chloe smirked as she walked into class, tossing her hair over her shoulder. Her gaze swept over the classroom in defiance, letting all her classmates know that she was above them. Ms. Thomas glared at her.
"Miss Lukasiak. You're aware that you're eighteen minutes late?"
Chloe shrugged and flipped her hair, taking a seat in the back beside Paige.
Ms. Thomas sighed and handed her the assignment sheet, shaking her head. "Some things never change."
Chloe rolled her eyes, a smirk playing onto her face. What else could she say? It was fun being the rebel rocker of the school. Rules? Ha.
