The first thing you notice when you walk into the woods at night is the void; this vast space where your eyes are no more useful than the shoes on your feet. Some fear this void, saying they don't know what hides behind that veil of darkness. Others enjoy exploring the unknown and rejoice at the chance to plunge into the nothingness. Both are wrong. By the laws of life, when there is no light, there is darkness. Darkness is not empty. Darkness is a doorway; a channel for the unknown to enter. You can walk in and out of the darkness forever because it goes on and on until there is something luminous to pierce through the heavy cloak of night, but even then you are still standing on an ocean surrounded by darkness. The light is finite, and shelter will not always be available. In many of the same instances, the mind is similar. The consciousness cannot occupy every corner, and when the beams of sanity begin to bend, malicious things manifest. Everyone can succumb to the madness, you must first have the empty spaces.
Everyday, couch potatoes and businessmen alike are lightening the load in their respective minds. Every time you lied, every time you snuck out late, every time you cheated on your beaux, every time you turned away a drowning soul, you were shoveling away at whatever good you had. A good proportion of us will recognize what this feels like, and will choose not to do so again. Once more, there are others who disagree.
Sinning has a habit of introducing itself in idle times; when the winds are calm, metaphorically speaking. Churches recognize this, and ask to bargain your time for their services. It's a noble attempt, but unsuccessful. Whether you already have or have yet to, we all find ourselves alone. Our first breathes were bare from any company, and in our last moments, looking into the eyes of people around you, if any, you see them receding from you as you fall into the deeper sleep that leads you further and further away. We're all alone in this society. Undeniably, we are empty.
