The group heads out in the morning, just a few miles away from Fairview.
"I'm so hungry," Griffin exclaims, clutching his stomach.
"I'm sure they'll have plenty of food for us in Fairview," Nathan says, putting his hand on Griffin's shoulder.
"I sure hope so. They'd better have running water, too, because holy shit, do you smell like shit," Griffin laughs.
"I'd say the same for you buddy," Nathan chuckles, "but that's nothing new. Jillian, how're you doing?"
"I'm alright, I just want to get some food in me really soon," she says, rubbing her stomach.
"Are you...?" Valerie looks at her stomach.
"Pregnant? I think so," Jillian says.
"Hold up," Valerie says, rummaging through her bag. "They never took my purse back at the stadium, it's just full of feminine stuff, but I was saving this pregnancy test in case I ever needed it. You should have it," Valerie hands her the test.
"Lets stop for a minute and let Jillian use it, I'd like to know sooner rather than later if this is the real deal," Nathan says. The group stops as Jillian jogs behind a tree and takes the test. A couple of minutes later, she squeaks and runs to Nathan, throwing her arms around him. She shows him the test."
"Holy shit," he exclaims, lifting Jillian off her feet, hugging her tight.
"As happy as I am for you two, we really need to keep moving," Griffin suggests.
"You're right," Nathan says with a smile. He sets Jillian down on her feet. "Lets go, guys. Fairview isn't far, let's get there while it's still early."
The group makes their way down the road, stopping in front of a big green sign.
"'Welcome to Fairview,'" Nathan reads. "We actually made it. Let's find that military base."
"There's a bunch of white arrows on the ground, I'm sure that'll lead us right to it," Griffin observes.
"You're probably right, good call. Let's get going," Nathan says, leading the group towards the base. As they follow the arrows, a window behind them shatters. They turn around to see a creature crawling toward them at extreme speeds. Nathan pulls out his shotgun and blows its head into smithereens.
"We should keep our guard up," Valerie suggests. "I'm sure there's a lot more around here."
Hunter barks at a house, and two more creatures hop out, heading towards the group.
"Run or shoot?" Griffin asks.
"Both!" Nathan yells. They sprint on the path of the arrows, firing at the creatures behind them. Two seem to appear for every single one they're able to put down. One catches up with the group, pouncing on Valerie. Nathan kicks it off of her and fires a shot into its head. He helps Valerie to her feet, but she's unable to walk properly.
"I think I rolled my ankle!" She shouts over the sound of gunfire.
"Don't worry, I'm not going to leave you!" Nathan yells, carrying her in his arms. "Come on, let's get the fuck out of here!"
They make it to the gates, guarded my two armed soldiers.
"Keep your heads down!" A soldier shouts, firing at the BC chasing them. Nathan sets Valerie down and fires into the BC, taking multiple down before they get too close. The gates open, and a few soldiers come out, attempting to clear out the creatures.
"Get inside!" One of them yell. Nathan picks Valerie up and leads the group inside the base. A decorated soldier meets them inside.
"I'm glad to see you folks could make it. I'm Major Tom, and this is my base. We can take care of your injured friend immediately," Major Tom says. He radios for a medic to come to the gates. They make their way to the group within seconds.
"I can take care of her, no worries," the medic says, extending her arms to carry Valerie. Nathan hands her off to the medic she turns to him before being carried off.
"Thank you, Nate," she says. Nathan smiles and waves as she's carried towards the infirmary.
"Let's get you all well-fed before we brief you on your responsibilities as a member of this base. Sgt. Bruce will take you to the kitchen to get you fed. Follow him, and find me if you have any questions," Major Tom says.
The group follows Sgt. Bruce to the kitchens, where they're fed and briefed.
"How many members in your group?" He asks Nathan.
"Four, five of you count the dog," He smiles.
"Four," the soldier says as he writes down. "Any medical conditions?"
"My girlfriend is pregnant," Nathan says, "and my friend Griffin here worse than sin."
"Pregnancy, okay, how far along is she?"
"About a month?" Nathan responds, looking to Jillian. She nods.
"Are you positive she's pregnant? Did you take a test?"
"Yes, she took a test earlier today."
"Okay, just making sure. We'll make sure she's well cared for and given regular check-ups. Do you have any questions for me?"
"What are we expected to do here?" Griffin asks.
"Well you'll be given a job and taught how to properly do it, something like guard duty, farming, keeping our water clean, that sort of thing. Just stuff that'll help the base as a whole."
"Sounds good to me," Jillian exclaims. "When do we start?"
"Tomorrow, you guys just get some rest and we'll find you in the morning. There should be room in the barracks for you to sleep in until we've got housing ready for you," the sergeant closes his notebook and shakes everyone's hands. "Welcome to Fairview."
