Overwhelming

It feels like it's been hours. Endless, unforgiving hours.  You and Toby were walking through a heavily vegetative area, deep in the woods of somewhere in the middle of nowhere. Neither one of you spoke a word to the other. Silence filled the air between you two. You noticed something about Toby. Something was on his mind. It was something in the way he moved, as he slowly moved his left foot just a little quicker than his right. It was a strange thing to notice, but something seemed off about it, and that's as much as you could piece together.

"I d-don't unders-stand." He stuttered, breaking the quiet atmosphere between you and him. His words caught your attention, hanging off of the cliff of your mind. "Y-you remember m-me. That's w-what you said, b-but we never t-t-talked." His head twitched, less violently than it did before though. "How does that e-even make s-sense?"

"It's something that I tried to notice. I was a quiet kid too, though I guess you didn't realize that sometimes I watched you. I saw the other kids bully you in the days you and I went to school together. I should've stepped in, but nothing back then clicked." You said softly. The words just seemed to come out of your mouth like some kind of humanoid auto correct or google auto-fill.

"W-would've b-b-been nice. I s-still would've turned out t-this w-way though. I think that w-would've been inevitable." His tone was sorrowful. "(Y/n), have y-you ever lost s-someone c-c-close to you? Like, inseparably c-close?" He asked. The crunching of leaves under his shoes filled the silent seconds it took for you to gather your thoughts.

"I think everyone has lost someone at some point they were close to, like an animal or a friend." You replied. Your eyes glanced ahead. There was nothing but big oak trees, covering the ground with their shade. Without them, the temperature would have felt much warmer, but with them, a cool breeze brushed upon the ground of both you and Toby. "Why?"

"N-no reason." You could tell he was lying. Maybe he was referring to the fire? It didn't matter that much to you. He probably wouldn't answer if you asked about it anyways.

"Hey Toby?"

"Y-yeah (Y/n)?"

"Where are we going?" Though from the looks of it, it seemed like you were going nowhere. Maybe he was just planning to kill you in the woods all along. He stayed quiet, ignoring your question. "Toby!" You said, he responded, giving you a side glance as if asking what you wanted. "Where are we going?" You asked again. He let out a shaky sigh.

"M-my sorta h-house. It's t-t-too dangerous for us t-to leave y-you at your home." He replied. He seemed angry at his answer, or maybe just annoyed.

"Dangerous?" You questioned.

"Y-yeah. L-likely to c-cause harm t-to someone or s-something else-"

"I know what dangerous means, Toby." You said, rolling your eyes. This conversation was becoming tedious. "I'm changing the subject before one of us kills the other. Or tries to at least." You sighed hard. "Why do you carry an axe? Like, why not a knife or something actually semi useful?"

"It's not an axe. It's a hatchet." He responded, annoyance very evident in his tone.

"What's the difference?"

"A lot."

"Like what?"

"L-like the fact I s-said it was a h-hatchet and you can't s-s-seem to let it go." You could tell he was getting angrier, but you decided to poke a little more, seeing how far you could really push him. Sure, it was mean, but it was like...  a low-key social experiment.

"Hm. That doesn't seem like a good answer at all."

"W-well if y-you're r-r-really that interested, T-there's p-probably a t-t-ton of articles on s-some shitty English w-w-website explaining the d-difference! Now Sh-shut up about it!" He said, turning around completely to face you. He honestly looked like he would've killed you then and there if he wasn't already invested in doing something beforehand, which was taking you to whatever place you guys were going.

"Jeez. Sorry." You said sarcastically. You weren't actually sorry, but now you saw how far you could actually push him before he could have the chance to snap.

About an hour passed before you two reached a grand mansion in the middle of the woods. The mansion was a tall, grey building, towering at the height of... nothing you've ever seen. It was too indescribably. It didn't seem tall, yet simultaneously, it did, like an optical illusion.

"W-welcome to my home." Toby stuttered, opening the door and nudging you to go in first. Looking to your left, you were greeted with nothing but silence. There was one other... person... in the house that you saw so far. He seemed skinny, with a black hoodie and a blue mask. Though, the mask looked weird. The place where the eyes were supposed to be were just big black circles, with something black oozing out. You felt chills crawling up your spine.

"Toby, what the fuck is this?" The person spoke. He didn't seem angry, but his voice was a deep, unsettling pitch.

"Y-you'll find out l-later Jack. If y-you're even allowed. P-p-proxy work." Toby responded. He seemed cold towards this "Jack" thing, but maybe there was a good reason.

"At least introduce me." Jack replied, but Toby ignored him.

"(Y/n), j-just follow m-me. I'm taking y-you to m-m-my boss." Toby said, pushing past where Jack was at, then proceeding to go up a flight of stairs, down a long hallway, and towards a dark room. Toby knocked on the door, which opened with no further explanation. There was... nobody in the room.

"Toby, my child." A voice boomed in the room, but there was no source. "Why have you not completed your mission?"

"S-s-sir, you may find t-this interesting. She f-fights b-back and v-very well for t-t-that matter." He responded to the inter-dimensional voice. Suddenly, a tall, slender man in a tux appeared before the two of you. He was pale... no... completely white, as if he was a sheet of paper. He had no face, but still talked and sensed where you two were. He leaned closer to you.

"What is your name?" He spoke directly to you this time.

"(Y-y/n)." You stuttered, feeling confused at what events were taking place at about now.

"You will be staying with us temporarily until we figure out what to do with you. After all, we cannot have any threats to our people." He spoke coolly, with a sharp undertone in his words. "Toby, she stays in the empty bunk in your room. Make her feel... welcome." He said, before vanishing in front of you. Toby bowed to the faceless thing before dragging you out of the room to his.

"C-congratulations. I g-g-guess he doesn't want to k-kill you. Y-yet." He spoke gently. Looking at his face, you could see the sly smirk on his face as he added the 'yet' to the end of his sentence. "Nice j-job on living, not t-t-that it w-was ever your ch-choice (Y/n). I'll see you l-l-later." He said, then winked. Though, you passed it off as another one of his tics, then rolled your eyes as he closed the door, leaving you alone in your new room. This can't be happening. You have to go home.
