Ariadne walked down the halls quietly with Kendra until they turned the corner and came face to face with the grand doors. A row of soldiers carrying spears lined either side of the doors, creating a metallic tunnel to walk through.

Kendra grasped Ariadne's upper arm lightly.
"Servants do not participate in the ball, but I will see you later."

"I can't do this," Ariadne complained.

"You can and you will if you want to find your father."

"No you don't understand, I haven't danced in years."

"Ari, you are a strong woman. Go in there and show them just how wrong they are. When you reach the end the doors will open and they will announce you. I suggest you use your mother's maiden name."

Ariadne lightly tugged the end of her corset.

Kendra gave her a light shove, and off she went. The first spears fell down in an X behind her. No turning back. Ariadne looked at the path ahead.

She took a breath and stepped forward. As she went, the spears blocked the way out behind her. Before she knew it, she was at the doors and a soldier turned to face her.

"Name?"

Ariadne swallowed, brushing her hands down her dress, and lifted her chin.

"You may call me Lady Darkwood."

The doors opened as the soldier tapped his spear on the floor. It echoed round the room and the loud music that she had heard through the doors quietened. Everyone inside the room paused mid dance, and stared.

"I present Lady Darkwood of..." the soldier turned to her.

"Lys. I hail from Lys." She took a step forward.

"Lady Darkwood of Lys." The soldier bowed and closed the doors behind her.

Whispers were uttered not so quietly around her as she stood by the doors. She looked left then right, her foot paused above the floor.

A male stood to her right and stepped forward. His hair was a deep shade of rich mahogany and fell to his shoulders in loose curls. Green eyes full of silver flecks were framed by thick brows and a straight nose. Full sensuous lips sat above a strong chin.

His broads shoulders were covered by a heavy orange jacket, and matching terracotta trousers hung from his hips. His chest was broad but didn't strain against his clothes.

His eyes met Ariadne's and she took a light step back.

"It's a pleasure to meet you. Lord Orin Redwood at your service." He bowed at his waist.

Ariadne looked past Orin and saw Kallen stood next to a very beautiful female Fae, engaged in animated conversation. Her arm trailed down the King's and she leaned forward to whisper in his ear. Their eyes met as Lord Orin stood up properly. Orin looked at Ariadne then turned to look over his shoulder.
