ALL RIGHTS GO TO LAUGHTERANDJYNX FOR HER STORY
-
Her long hair was swept over her eyes and I had to refrain from pushing past the nurse and opening the door separating us. Stupid "family only" rules, I was like her family. Someday, I hoped she would say yes and officially be Charlotte Chandler, then we'd be family.
After the accident, Ambulances arrived within a number of minutes and Charlotte, Tyler and I were being taken to hospital. I don't remember much of the ride there or what happened once I had arrived. All I knew was that I was okay. Sure, I had a few cuts and bruises but it was nothing compared to the pain my best friend must be going through.
Tyler had fractured his ribs and there was a fairly deep cut running from his ankle to his shin which looked quite painful. I didn't mean to sound selfish, but if he gets out of this and Charlotte doesn't, I will always wish their roles were reversed. A wave of nurses rushed into Tyler's room. I darted up from my chair and ran over to a doctor who looked as prepared as a bull charging at a red flag.
"Sir, please tell me what's going on."
"I'm sorry, Mr Chandler but you'll need to step back and let me do my job before I can answer any questions," He brushes me off and goes to step past me.
"What is your job, then?!" I demand.
The doctor stops walking, sighs and shakes his head. He turns to me and I can see the urgency in his eyes.
"As I'm sure you've been told by now, Mr Bradshaw has not woken up from being knocked unconcious in the car accident. We have him on a drip and heart rate monitor but there are signs that he has experienced some punctured organs and may not get better. I'm sorry to leave you in the dark but that's as much as I can tell you for now," the doctor's expression softens over the course of him telling me what's wrong but I can tell he still wants to go. "If you'll excuse me, I need to do my job."
I step aside and let the doctor rush into Tyler's room. The window in front of me allows enough room for me to see Tyler's bruised face one more time before the curtains are shut and I can't see anything inside it.
This is all my fault. I should never have called Charlotte while I was driving. Everything is my fault. If only I had been completely honest with her and we could be sitting on my couch, watching a movie and eating pizza. If only this stupid Virginator title didn't exist.
I take a seat on one of the uncomfortable plastic waiting chairs and hang my head in my hands, running them over my skin and through my hair mulitple times before I let them fall in my lap. The cold in the hallway ungulfs me and goosebumps form on my skin, but I can't be bothered to do anything about it. My head feels cloudy except for the one thought crystal clear in my mind; is Charlotte okay?
Some time between the doctor entering Tyler's room and a nurse asking me if I wanted something to eat or drink, everyone arrived. Charlotte's dad was the first to arrive, his arms wrapped around me but I felt numb to the sensation. My parents were here somewhere but I ignored everything and everyone.
As quickly as it had happened, the nurses left Tyler's room and the doctor approached me. Why would he talk to me first? Wouldn't he want to tell Tyler's family?
"Mr Chandler, can I have a word with you in private?"
My breathing caught in my throat and I nodded slowly. I followed the doctor into a room which looked liked some kind of office. The door was shut behind me and I was offered a seat, which I refused.
"This has been torturing, doctor. Just tell me what's wrong!"
"My name is Doctor Chapman. Mr Bradshaw has unfortunately not survived the injuries he recieved. I am sorry to tell you his death has been announced as 11:34pm. I will be speaking to Mr Bradshaw's father to see what will happen after this. You are more than welcome to continue waiting for Miss Summers' results. One again, my sincerest condolences."
After that, I left the room and sat down next to Mr Summers again. He looked at me expectantly, like he wanted me to outburst suddenly. Once he realised I wouldn't talk, he relaxed in his chair and faced Charlotte's room.
"Tyler's dead," I whisper.
"What?" He snaps his head to look at me and I can already imagine how Charlotte will react once she knows. If she does get the opportunity to know.
"The doctor just told me he's dead."
"Oh, Luke... I'm s-"
"Don't apologize to me, please. You've done nothing wrong and it's really my fault he's gone. We weren't even friends. I just want her to be okay."
He nodded and sat back in his seat, finally realising there wasn't mch we could talk about. Another hour or two passed. Doctors came and went and nurses offered me food. I didn't want to eat. I didn't feel like eating. Finally, a doctor exited Charlotte's room. I stood up as quickly as I could.
"She's awake. She would like to talk to Mr Chandler," he spoke, glancing over at Mr Summers apologetically before looking at me.
I followed him into the room, my gaze on the floor. Once I had entered the room, my eyes landed on her. Her beautiful face painted with sorrow. All I wanted was for her to smile again. All I needed was for her to smile again.
"Hi," she croaks out.
"Hey," I answer. I took her hand in mine and brought it up to my lips, kissing her knuckles gently. "How do you feel?"
"Probably as bad as I look," she told me truthfully.
"You look stunning, Charlotte. You always do."
A light blush crept up on her cheeks and she turned away from me, only to look back a few seconds later. "How's Tyler?"
My face fell and I gulped loudly. I wouldn't have been suprised if people out in the hall heard that. Charlotte bit her lip and nodded, silently understanding. Not saying another word, I sat on the bed next to her, draping my arm over her shoulder. She nudged her face into my neck and I felt a few tears drip onto my skin.
We sat in silence for a long time before she sat up. I watched her intently while she wiped the tears off her cheeks and looked me directly in the eye.
"I love you, Luke."
"I love you, Charlotte."
