Missing You
On the day it happened, he was distracted. He had a deadline and had downed three cups of coffee and five energy drinks.
He didn't understand.
He couldn't imagine what everyone was telling him. They were hugging, crying, smiling. It was...weird.
And then he walked in.
He being Avian, his best friend and secret crush. Noah stood in shock when he came in, smiling that smile that made Noah's knees quake. He almost collapsed. Avian caught him and cracked some joke about his good looks and fainting admirers, but Noah had too much blood rushing to his ears to fully comprehend what he said.
Noah was torn. He didn't know if he should hug him or kill him - he wanted to do both. He settled on giving him a watery smile and seeking refuge inside the tiny bathroom in his apartment. He cursed his mother for having a spare key to his safe haven, because coming home to this was the worse and best way to end his day.
He ignored the incessant knocks from his mother, the harsh pounds of his drunk cousin, and the scratches his little nephew made because he believed he was a cat since age one. It was when he heard the slow, cautious knocks sounding on the door that made his heart quicken.
"Noah, are you gonna let me in or will you continue to ignore me?" He heard through the door.
Noah wanted to ignore him, open the door and punch him in his handsome face, scream a loud fuck you - He ended up opening the door and stepping aside to allow Avian space to walk in. Avian leaned against the door and Noah just sat on the closed toilet. They sat in a silence that was caught between awkward and tormenting. Noah refused to look up from his sneakers because he could feel Avian's gaze burn his skin.
"I asked your mother to do this," Avian said finally.
It wasn't really a shock. He always did manage to coax Noah's mom into helping him in his schemes. But Noah knew he expected an answer so he said, "Oh."
Noah wanted to stab out his eye because out of all the words he could've said, he said Oh. But then again, what could one say to his friend that had been missing in action for a year?
"How is work?" Avian tried again.
Noah managed a sneer, "How do you think it is?"
Avian didn't reply. He knew Noah was prone to panic attacks that usual led to him being demoted or 'in between jobs.'
"Were they bad this year?" Avian asked.
Noah ignored him, because the answer was as obvious as his hair color. His best friend and love of his life had been lost for fourteen months and Noah had never been known for his sound mind, so how could they be good this past year?
"Where were you?" Noah said instead.
Avian frowned, "I - I can't tell you that. It's confidential."
Noah understood - he didn't like it, but he understood. So he nodded, "Are you going back?"
Avian shrugged, "My tour is up, but I'm thinking about it."
"Then you shouldn't have come," Noah decided. "It would only make things worse for me when you go back."
Avian sighed, "It would've been worse for me if I went back and hadn't come see you."
Oh yes. Of course, because what Noah needed always came second to what the great Avian Gray wanted.
"That's not true," Avian said and Noah realized he said that aloud.
"How isn't it?" Noah asked, because he only spoke the truth. "You wanted to go off and get killed, didn't you? And you left. Didn't even have the heart to tell me until the day of. Because God forbid, I'd make it hard for you. It'd be a shame for you to feel sad."
Avian gritted his teeth, "That's not true. I didn't want to upset you."
"Yes, because it was very relaxing for me to find out on the day of your departure that my closest friend was going into the Army, and everyone knew about it but me. Great way to keep me sane, Avian. Just awesome," Noah said sarcastically, because when hasn't sarcasm been his defense, his refuge?
Noah waited for Avian to do something. Say something. What he didn't expect was for a pair of warm, moist lips to firmly place themselves over his. Noah froze before melting against the solid body that was pressed against him so beautifully, it was almost poetic.
Lips slid against each other and melded together in a chaste, but passionate kiss. Noah's brain short-circuited and he nerves tingled and his skin set fire. Oh god, it was magical.
Avian was the first to pull back from the kiss, but not away from Noah - just enough to breathe, his lips sometimes brushing against Noah's. His eyes swept over Noah's face to gouge his reaction. He smirked at the relaxed look on his face. Then, he remembered why he did it and he turned serious.
"Noah," Avian started. "Don't you ever think that I don't care about what you need or how you feel. I went because I felt like I needed to and I spent every day since I left wishing I was here and missing you. Telling you on the last day was your mom's idea, ok? She thought it was better than having you freaking out as the day got closer for me to leave. I know you hate me for it, but I thought it was a good idea. But, that was in the past. Now, I want to spend every chance with you in every possible way. Will you let me?"
Noah bit his lip, "...It wasn't your idea?"
Avian shook his head.
"You missed me?"
"Every goddamn day," Avian insisted.
Noah let out a breath that had been lodged in his throat for the past few years. "I want you to spend every chance with me in every possible way. I've missed you, too."
Avian smiled that smile again. The one that stole Noah's breath away and made his heart stop. A smile that was designed for him, meant for him.
And Noah had to smile back.
