The unnerving clack of Jackie's heels brings my attention back to what's going on right now. I'm laying back, in a chair, waiting. For someone I don't know to give me a syringe-full of something I don't know if I want in my body. An experiment, Jackie calls it, but I would rather call it a new form of torture.
The man I've been waiting for comes in, and he lets the door bang behind him as he walks up to me. Firmly in his grasp is a syringe full of purple liquid.
"Camryn, Camryn. You should've listened to you father. You really should have."
My throat constricts. "My father is dead."
"Yes, I know."
Silence.
"Jackie, come here a moment please."
In a flash I remember the last words my father spoke to me: find your brother. And never let anything get to you. Anger could be the death of you. I love you.
Jackie's fingers lace through my hair, pulling through gently before she pressures one hand on my forehead and the other firmly under my chin. She lifts my face back, exposing my neck. My eyes flash and she turns away. The last thing I see is Asher's poker face as he injects the liquid from the syringe into the side of my neck. Jackie lets go of my head and moves to catch my body as I roll unconscious from the chair.
The first thing I hear when I wake up is a beep. Then another, and another. My head feels heavy, and foggy. I can't think straight and my vision is blurred. The beeping stops as Asher's hands appear in front of my face and a loud clap rattles my teeth. My head clears and Asher's stubbly chin comes clear.
"Excellent."
What's excellent?
Asher steps back to examine me, running his eyes up and down my bare arms, what amount of my legs is visible below the hem of my bermuda shorts, and the place on my neck where he injected that purple stuff last night. Or was it last week? Whatever. Asher is respectful enough when he comes close to examine my neck, though his touch makes my skin crawl. He pokes the injection sight a little before looking me dead in the eye.
"Camryn, thanks for volunteering."
"Volunteering for what?" I snap.
"For trying out my latest serum, of course. We'll keep you here for the next two weeks to examine your progress, then let you go."
"That's stupid," I say before my mind can stop my mouth. "Who kidnaps a teenager, injects them with purple juice, documents whatever progress they make, and lets them go in two weeks?"
"Don't you ever talk to me like that again, you hear?" He growls, voice low. Quiet is dangerous with Asher. He has his hand raised to slap me, then lowers it, swears, and stomps over to a computer touch screen embedded flush with the wall. He taps out a code, then a low hum fills the air.
"That's the security system. If you so much as think about trying any monkey business, the security will automatically activate that serum I gave you last night. You'll fall unconscious, no matter what. And you won't be able to move for three hours or until I clap my hands. Got that?"
I nod defiantly. My wrists are getting sweaty from being clipped to the armrests of the some sort of board in the back of a glass tube I'm standing in, a sort of helmet on my head and my feet are bare. I can't move my legs. A chill runs down my spine when I realize I'm stuck here, Asher's prisoner, a little experiment. Is that all I am? An experiment? Surely not.
The hum surrounds me, yet it is quieter, when the front panel of the glass compartment slides shut. The clasps around my wrist open and a warm air surrounds my body, and I allow ymyself to hover, weightless, just above the compartment floor.-----
