“I can’t talk right now… I’m sorry but I can’t.”

That was the third time I had hung up on my mom in the last week. It wasn’t that I was being cross, and cold towards her, I just didn’t want to have to deal with the fact that talking to her meant talking about my brother’s condition… And that was the last thing I wanted to think about.

“Who was that?” Luke asked from deep under his covers.

The poor kid had been puking his guts out for the last week or so, especially since freaking Amber made him go ice-skating.

Amber.

“It was no one really… Just you know… Cassidy wanting to talk. She’s in desperate demand for the Irwin.” I replied trying to play off the phone call so Luke wouldn’t become suspicious of anything.

He smiled a bit and I took that as recognition of him buying my story.

I hated lying to Luke. Hell, he had become one of my best friends here, but part of me didn’t want to share my brother’s sickness with anyone so they’d pity me. It’s not that I didn’t trust them; it’s just in human nature to feel bad for someone going through some sort of “difficulty”. I didn’t want my college experience to be limited to being “the guy with a sick brother, maybe we should invite him out because his life sucks.”

Although I did tell Amber and she seemed fine. She didn’t treat me any differently until the ice rink.

I don’t know what the hell happened, why she blew up at me like that. I don’t know if she personally decided to have a vendetta towards Ashton Irwin that day and make him feel like absolute shit, to make him feel like he wanted to kill himself… but she succeeded.

“Are you guys going to actually admit you have feelings for one another soon? Or nah?” Luke asked stopping to cough in the middle of his sentence.

“First of all can you please stop saying that ridiculous or nah thing? It’s fucking annoying.”

Just knowing Luke, I could tell he was rolling his eyes at me, “This is college, I can say whatever ridiculous thing I want and won’t get judged for it. Tis I am a young adult.”

Now it was my turn to roll my eyes. Sure I had come up with the whole “This is college” thing, but now everyone was over using it, even Luke.

I never thought I’d say that.

“To answer you’re question, no we probably won’t actually admit anything yet.”

Luke whined, “Why not?”

Him and his questions, I swear.

“Maybe we’re both being responsible adults who see that we’re in the prime of our youth and shouldn’t be tied down to another human being. We should be experimenting and having fun.”

“Or you’re both dipshits,” I heard Luke mutter under his breath just loud enough for me to hear. I decided to ignore him.

“So do you think you’ll be heading back to classes anytime soon?” I asked, attempting to change the subject.

“I’m not sure… I don’t want to miss anymore but I also don’t want to throw up all over the people in front of me in my Psych class.”

“Hmm, you hate psych that much huh?”

“I was just giving an example Ashton.

“I figured Luke.”

I felt my phone buzz in my hand and checked it to see my mom trying to call me once again.
