As we park, my dad passes me something.
A silver dagger.
It's charmed with four of the elements.
Fire, earth, air, and water.
Made to kill the immortal.
The hilt is a dark, cool colored stone. There is a round sapphire in the bottom of the hilt. Visible from both sides.
I tuck it away.
We walk peacefully to the doors.
Adrian pulls the door open for me.
I eye him suspiciously.
He knows more than I'd like him to.
I see humans walking about inside.
I become more aware of the dagger inside my pant waist.
This is useful against all breeds.
Father and I head into a book store. The trio disappear.
I pass an interesting looking series.
Vampire Academy.
I tap dad on the shoulder.
He turns around and looks.
Smiling, he holds out the basket. I put the boxed series in.
We have an odd fascination with vampire novels.
An idea comes to my head.
"Dad, does Adrian have a nickname?"
"Yeah, his brother calls him Adri. And Adrian calls him Maxi. I think it's cute." He says, a gentle smile on his face.
"Do you love them?" I ask.
"I love Adrian as if he was my own son. Joseph never seemed to love him enough. And I had more than enough love. So I've cared for him since you two were children."
"Does... Does someone beat Adrian?" My voice sheepish.
My father hesitates.
He seems lost in thought for a moment.
"I think so. But I can't do anything unless he talks to someone about it. I've asked him before. He ignores me. His mind is surrounded in walls of his own making. I can't read his thoughts."
When he showed up at my room before I came to meet you, it looked like there was bruises on his face. Under his makeup."
"He seems to like you. I want you to try to get him to talk to you."
I nod.
We return to shopping.
Stacks and baskets of books later, my father and I strut out of the book store laughing.
I see Adrian across a fountain holding a bag.
"Hey, Adri!" I shout.
He turns around, a look of mild shock on his face.
It quickly turns to amusement.
Us three meet in the middle.
"I'm gonna guess you told her that?" He eyes my father, embarrassed.
Dad shrugs.
I giggle a little and he turns bright red.
"I need to use the restroom." I say.
Adrian holds a offering hand out for my bags. I gingerly allow him to take them.
I scurry off to the restroom.
I knock on my fathers mental walls.
Yes?
He answers me.
Tell me if he says anything about me?
Eh, sure.
There's a pressure behind my eyes. The tiles on the floor are a golden brown, matched with milky beige walls.
There are 5 sinks to the left facing five stalls.
The marble top of the sink station is white and orange sherbet.
The stalls are the same beige as the walls. As I find my trip to the restroom, my father knocks in my head.
He asked what your nickname was. I'm a fair man.
I groan out loud.
Adrian is a smile when I approach.
"Winnie the Pooh?" He arches an eyebrow at me.
"Shut up." I give him a sassy look.
Dad laughs a little.
"So whats in the bag?" I ask, pointing to Adrian's bag.
He shrugs, secrets in his eyes.
And that's when I felt it.
My chest was tightening. The pressure behind my eyes gets crazy painful.
I feel unsafe.
Dad makes eye contact with me and my eyes burned.
I shut my eyes for a moment and looked back to my father. His pupils had turned into long diamond shapes.
I glanced at myself in the glass behind me.
My eyes looked the same. Pupils as long narrow diamonds.
Adrian was looking between our rigid stances confused.
I see him at he lunges at Adrian.
An immorzian. Immortal vampire. Deadly murderers.
I throw myself at the man, he stumbles.
Just then another attacks my father.
I throw Adrian against the closest wall.
"Don't move. I know that you are trained but I need to know that you are safe in this fight."
Adrian nods.
Taking a battle stance in front of him, I pull out my dagger.
Guy number one runs at me.
I slash out at his face and he screams.
He throws a punch that lands on the upper right of my face and I let him, taking the opportunity to hit his heart.
He's gone.
I notice my father has taken out his as well.
We look to each other.
I grab Adrian's hand and run, my father close behind me.
We have to find Maxwell and Jake. They are only have trained. They're in danger.
I jump in front of Adrian.
"Where is your brother?" I demand his answer.
"Spencer's."
We run again.
We find them in the back of the store, laughing at dildos and funny greeting cards.
Jake sees my face.
"Oh, shit."
"Get in that dressing room and lock the door. All three of you use all your strength to keep it closed no matter what." My dad orders.
He looks to me as they run to the dressing room.
"It's just us, isn't it?"
He nods.
He grabs the door handle to the dressing room.
I feel his magic as he charms the metal.
They will be safe now. No one but dad can open that door now.
Three immorzian enter the store. They push over merchandise on their way through.
I'm sure of it that dad will pay any damage.
One runs to father and two pounce on me.
I throw one across the store and the other throws me into a wall.
I jump back up, in vamp speed.
I throw a kick into his chest and he growls as he falls backwards.
The other makes it back to me as two more enter the store.
Haven taken on his, dad runs at them.
I keep to the back of the store with my two.
I stay my back towards the door as I war with the female.
She swings for me, I lash at her.
It's a battle of give and take as I wait for an opening.
They probably thought going for me would distract my father.
I take a hard hit to the mouth as her arm lifts and he rib cage is unprotected.
My blade intrudes on her heart as the male pulls out a gun.
Just then, Adrian is beside me.
Seeing him, a look of excitement is on the mans face.
He bares his fangs and lungs for Adrian. Another joins and Adrian's neck is ripped open as he fights off the other.
He screams.
I stab his second opponent and throw the the other.
Adrian grabs his neck.
Blood laps over his hand.
I reach out to him. Touching him the bite wound is gone.
But saving him costs me.
As the gun is raised toward Adrian, I save him yet again.
It costs me. I knew it would.
But I don't care what it costs me.
I push him out of the way and the man fires before the gun is fully raised, giving me no time to move.
And a bullet bites my chest.
Once.
Twice.
A third time.
My fathers jumps him.
And he's dead.
The pressure behind my eyes is gone and I know we are safe.
I hit the ground.
Adrian is over my face. He's crying.
Maxwell is behind him, trying to get him to his feet.
He pushes him off. My dad is at my left side, across from Adrian.
I feel nothing but pain as my eyes shut.
The blackness swims around me and I scream.
I scream for my father.
I scream for Adrian.
I scream for myself.
And no one answers.
