Chapter 5
'BANG' The door swung open.
"If there is anyone in here come out now!" One of the men yelled. But now that I could hear there voices clearly, they have a funny accent.
"I SAID NOW!"
I looked down at Annie who was terrified, then over at mum who was hoping for the best. We were all crouched down behind a wall, holding out breaths, making sure not to make a sound. From where I was sitting, I could see dad standing behind another wall a little way away from us. I looked at him, trying to ask him what to do without moving. He just stared at me slightly smiling, then he mouthed 'I love you'. All I could see was fear in his eyes, and I was sacred as to what he would do.
The men were walking around, and they were obviously going to turn the place upside down to see if anyone is here. Then they stated talking in another language that I didn't understand.
All of a sudden dad walks out from behind his wall with tears in his eyes.
"STOP, GET ON YOUR KNEES OR WE'LL SHOOT!" One of them yelled. I couldn't hold back tears, what the hell was he doing!!
"Please, don't hurt me" dad said in a shaky voice, getting down on the ground and putting his hands behind his head.
"Who else is here other than you?"demanded the men.
"No one"
"Your lying!" One said and I heard their guns being prepared and ready to shoot.
"No one. I swear!" Dad yelled.
Then there was silence for a while. I sat there with my hands over my mouth, tears rolling out of my eyes, it was so hard to keep in my heavy breathing. My head was spinning, all I could think was 'what if this is the last time I see him, the last time I hear his voice!?'
"Fine" one of the men said breaking the silence.
"Stay on the ground".
There was a lot of shuffling and mumbling, "get up" one of the men said then they walked to the door and walked away.
I felt my heart start to beat faster, my head spinning like crazy, my breath getting faster. I turned and saw that Annie and mum were both feeling the same.
"Mummy, w where are they taking daddy? Is he coming back?" Annie choked out, but I could see that mum was in no state to answer.
"He is okay Annie, we will see him soon. Everything is going to be alright" I said weekly and pushing a smile to calm her. I looked at mum who mouthed 'thank you' to me. She knew as well as I did that there was a very low chance we would see him again. Those men were definitely not of our nationality, they could have taken him anywhere!
"Come quietly, we should eat something" mum said slowly getting up and tip toeing over to where the food was stashed. She knew we weren't hungry, and I was sure she wasn't hungry, not now, not after that.
"Girls, we have to make sure that are very quiet and careful all the time alright" mum said. Annie nodded her head, as did I. None of us had spoken a word and hours had passed, we all just cried and force fed ourselves half a slice of bread between us. Mum stood up and headed over to our bags and suitcases then looked at us. "We should get changed, the cloths we are in are a little grubby from all the ash and dirt". She dressed Annie and then they both curled up on the blankets where Annie fell asleep.
I walked over to the wall dad had been hiding behind and just sat there with tears in my eyes.
Why didn't he just hide and stay quiet? Why would he leave us? What are we supposed to do?
I had so many unanswered questions, and I wasn't sure if I would ever get the chance to ask him for the answers.
