The Siren's Call

The soft sound of my flute mingled in the wind as I watched waves crash against the rocks on the shore. The breeze gently combed my messy hair as I leaned lazily on the wall of the castle. Max's barking grew closer to where I was and I sighed, remembering the events of yesterday replay like a hazy dream. It had been my twentieth birthday and my parents had thrown a party on the ship in my honor.

Fireworks after fireworks lit the night sky in a kaleidoscope of colours. Catchy music played and all the guests danced. Even my parents, the king and queen, waltzed about on the deck. It was only a matter of time until chaos ensued on the deck. All too suddenly there was a clap of thunder and flash of lightening. Within seconds the waves became violent as they swayed the ship dangerously. Another flash illuminated the sky but this one struck the mast of the ship. Fire immediately sparked and the ship began to burn. Everything happened too quickly. Soon the wind was knocked out of me when a wooden pole crashed into my stomach. I felt darkness overcome me as soon as I hit the rough water. I awoke to the sweet voice of a figure that caressed my cheek softly. The brightness of the sun blinded me and aided by my dizziness, I could not see properly but I registered a few of the features. It was a girl. I slowly reached up to touch her hand on my cheek but her hazy form disappeared along with her magical voice before I could. I heard Max barking loudly before I closed my eyes again, reliving her touch.

It had happened on this very same shore, right in front of my castle. The girl had saved me from drowning. Her voice had captured my soul. She was the one, the one I was looking for. She was the only one who could melt me completely with just her voice and send sparks through my skin at her touch. I rolled the silver flute in my hand, frustrated. I had no idea who she was or where she went. I ran a hand through my hair irritably before my eyes landed on the large rock a little further away from the shoreline. My eyes widened. There she was! Seated on her side with her elbows straight, providing support. Her long crimson hair covered her front and her emerald eyes sparkled in the sunlight. I hastily made my way towards her before she had a chance to disappear. The water was ankle high when I reached the rock. I just stared at her, my mouth agape making her giggle.

"What's your name?"

She smiled beautifully at me. "Ariel."

I repeated her name under my breath, my gaze still fixed on her. Ariel jumped backwards into the water showing me a glimpse of an emerald green tail. She was a mermaid! It was unbelievable. I stared at her in shock just as she resurfaced. No words escaped my lips as I stood there silently trying to take it all in. Mermaids were supposed to be myths yet here she was, in all her glory. She beckoned me to follow her, making me snap out of my daze and pay attention. I jumped into a wooden rowboat just a little away from the rock and began to follow the soft trail of white she left behind. I rowed far till she stopped suddenly and surfaced, holding herself up on the side of the boat. Her hair cascaded down her shoulders like a fiery waterfall. Ariel began singing and I felt lost in a world where her melody controlled my actions. She extended her arms towards my face and caressed my cheeks. The distance between our faces lessened as I leaned forward. After a while of staring deep into my eyes she placed her soft lips on mine, making my heart flutter. On instinct I closed my eyes at the contact. Suddenly, electricity ran through my body and for a brief second it was as if I had entered Ariel's mind.

I saw a creature with fiery red hair, cat like green eyes and skin as grey as ash. Its pointy teeth shone like pearls and it clawed at my face as it screeched.

'EAT HIM!'

My eyes shot open and I pushed myself away from Ariel but it was too late. She had already pulled me into the water.

She smiled at me maliciously. "You can't escape the Siren's call!"

Ariel turned into the creature I had seen and I felt sharp teeth sink into my flesh. I wanted to scream out in pain just as a dozen more of these creatures attacked me. Clawing at my chest.

"We must take him to the Siren Queen!" At the shrill command, my battered body was hurled down deeper into the sea.

The pressure made my ears pop and I ran out of breath. One of the Sirens quickly clamped a weed on my arm and to my surprise I could breathe in the water because of it.

"She will want a living heart!" Ariel's voice had become shrill.

Deeper and deeper, I was pulled till we entered a dark trench. A hooded Siren approached me, this one a bit larger than the others. I saw my attackers pay respect to her and I struggled to get out of their vice like grip. The hooded Queen was in front of me now, restricting my movements by placing a rough, disgusting hand on my bare chest. She began to push her large nails into the skin above where my heart was but paused to lift her hood.

"I am craving for your heart, my son!"

My mother was the Siren Queen!
