Before his time as a crazed maniac, the Joker was formerly known as Jack. A freak accident at a chemical warehouse left Jack disfigured and seeking revenge on the Batman. This, combined with the trauma of his wife's earlier accidental death left Jack to go insane and become the Clown Prince of Gotham. After becoming the Joker he was known as a homicidal maniac by killing 3 dozen people in his first years of insanity. After many run ins with Batman, The Joker can calls Arkham home. "You know - It's amazing what you can get done when you don't concern yourself with right and wrong. When you just... do things for a laugh!" Laughed Joker when he got thrown into his cell like a rag doll.
