"Hey, Kira! Get out of there! You need to marry me!"
Terrified, Kira started to barricade the already-locked door. "Sorry, no thanks. I, uh, already got proposed to!"
"You liar!" Kira heard a thud. "You don't understand! The Williams are a high-class family, and I'm their only decendant! My mother can't have any more children, so I'm their last hope! Please! We don't have to marry, just give me some children and I'll leave you alone. You're pretty much the only girl I can marry on this entire island! I'll give you anything you want, so please!"
"I'm sorry, Richard, I can't! I...I..." Kira started to cry. She was gripping the necklace that her mother left her so hard that her knuckles were turning white.
"Son of a..!" Another thud. "You know you can't hide forever! If you don't accept right now, I will find you, and force you to breed! I will breed you until you will never remember what it's like to not be pregnant! The Williams family will not end here! You will regret that you ever tried to talk back!"
Kira started to cry even harder. "Well who the hell would marry you? You're just a big, fat, coward that relys on his family's power to get what he wants! You're cruel and heartless and... I'M NEVER MARRYING YOU!"
"YOU'LL REGRET THIS!" Richard banged his fist against the door, cursing. Kira could hear his footsteps and salty words getting quieter and quieter as he walked away from her apartment.
"Oh my god." Kira buried her face in her arms, and felt tears trickling down her skin. "The neighbors must hate me."
Her mind raced with the events of what just happened. Richard Williams was the richest person on the island, and he lived two cities over. He was supposed to "take care of" the island, which he did by being a tyrannical dictator. His house was an enormous mansion, while everyone else lived in apartments. Only 36 families were lucky enough to own houses, but they were all composed of at least 15 people and bundles of cash. Also, about 120 people lived in poverty, with virtually no home and very little clothes and food. The island was extremely small, with only about 1,000 people, but Richard Williams still liked to grab all the cash he could by heavily taxing the people. Everyone hated him, except for the 36 families that lived in houses, as they were on the island council and they were rich enough to live a good life.
Kira stood up and wiped the tears from her face. She was one of 12 unmarried women on the island. Two of those women were babies, and seven of them were still in school. One of the remaining girls was already proposed to by Luka Petrograd, one of the 36 house-dwellers. Their marriage isn't confirmed, but probably will be within a month. The other girl is engaged to Kim Se-Tao, another house-dweller. That just leaves one: Kira Yoo, the unwilling target of Richard Williams.
I need to get out of here.
Kira started to count all of the money that she had left. $32.69 in my wallet, plus the 300-ish dollars in the safe... This should be enough. It'll take him about one day to get back to his house, and he'll probably need one day to gather and organize the security he needs to capture me. Then he'll need one more day to get back, probably a bit more as he'll have some gear and people in tow. So that'll give me about 3 days to buy what I need and get the heck out of here. I am not being "bred" by that pig. I'm only having children with a person that I love, which I'll probably never find on this island. But either way, it won't be with him.
The next morning, Kira went on a little shopping spree. She replaced all of her delicate, feminine clothes with rugged, durable mens' ones. She chopped her hair off, and ended up using a special chemical dye to make it permenantly grow a strange whitish-pinkish color. She sold her apartment and quit her job. She found a small, run-down shack in the woods, and decided to use it as her hideaway. After bringing all of her clothes, food, and personal items, she left her apartment, just at the sunset of day three.
Alright, Kira. She thought to herself. From here on out, you are not Kira Yoo. Your parents on the mainland rejected you, and you don't have a last name. Nobody knows you, and you don't know them. You're just one of the 120 people living in poverty. You went to Dimitrov High, not Williams High, and you just graduated. You're here to live far away from the child-thirsty house-dwellers, and you are not a girl. You are a boy.
