5 years before the fall of Shiganshina
"I forbid you to go (Y/n)! Neither of my kids are going to sacrifice themselves as Titan food!"
You were currently in a heated argument with your parents, most specifically your mom. You had just informed them of your ambition to join the Scouts, in which they did not take it lightly.
"You don't want to go out beyond the walls (Y/n), it's a gruesome place." Your father said, in a much calmer tone than your mother
"But I do! It'd be better than this endless nightmare! Hiding within the walls, we might as well be a nice present, wrapped with a little bow on top for the Titans! Whether or not you want to believe it, one day the walls won't hold! And we'll be sitting ducks," I retorted, anger lacing my voice "I'm going to fight and reclaim what was rightfully ours!"
Little did you know, your little brother was listening to the whole thing, letting your words sink into his small, child mind. He idolized you, always wanting to be just like you. And despite the fact you're ten years older, he takes it upon himself and tries to be a protective brother he believes you deserve.
"Don't be stupid! All it is, is certain death!" Your mom yelled back at you, grabbing your shoulders. You shrug them off, still scowling at her. She then turned to your father, "Scold the girl! Tell her how stupid it is for her to dream of becoming some suicidal solider!"
You were about to make another snarky remark when your dad spoke up, causing both you and your mom to cease your argument
"Your words won't stop her Carla," your Dad shook his head lightly before turning to you with a tight smile "Isn't that right (Y/n)? That with or without permission, you were going to enlist in the training weren't you?"
Completely taken back by his ability to decipher your plans so quickly, you merely nod in response.
Your dad gets up from where he had been seated, ruffled your hair lightly before stalking off to go to your parents shared bedroom. Your mom on the other hand just looked at you, before sighing and walking over, pulling you into a tight embrace.
"I know I can't stop you," she spoke softly, and you felt hot tears on your shoulder "But can you p-promise me one thing?"
"O-Of course," you reply, trying to hold in your tears but finally give up, letting them cascade down your cheeks
"J-Just don't go and get yourself killed, okay?"
"I promise"
She released you, wiping both yours and her tears before giving you a weak smile. She then followed your dad into their room.
You stand there in shock for a moment, confused at what just happened. Then, you decide you'd get some sleep and enlist in the morning. You walk quietly to you and Eren's bedroom, opening the door slowly, hoping for the sound not to wake him.
You step in, slowly closing the door behind you.
"You're gonna leave?"
Eren's small voice spoke, filling the quiet void, making you jump in surprise. You sit down on his bed, pulling him into your side, rubbing his arm in a soothing motion.
"Yes, but not for a few days," you replied, your voice barely audible, and yet the boy still heard you.
"Why?" He asked, simply not understanding the reason behind you leaving. Before you answered, he sadly added "My birthday is next week..."
You sigh, feeling guilty that you weren't going to be there for his birthday. While you were pulling him closer, you suddenly got an idea and suggested it to Eren, "How about tomorrow, we can go out and explore, just the two of us? It would be like an early birthday present,"
