The sun shone through my open window, waking me harshly from a dream I could only remember traces of.

A wolf, running through the woods, dark fur glinting as it flashed between the green foliage. One word echoed out through the dream. As the beautiful wolf ran I heard, "Mine."

I was used to these strange dreams. I'd been having them since I was a child.

I yawned loudly and stretched my protesting joints, forcing myself to leave the warm haven of my bed. I padded across the soft carpet of my room and headed straight for the shower.

~20 minutes later~

I wiped the fog off of my mirror and looked into it. I felt as if I were forgetting something important..I shook the feeling off as well as I could and sighed.

I dried my long, dark brown hair until it lay shining like silk down my back in soft waves and brushed it one last time before opening my makeup bag. I applied a layer of mascara to my eyelashes, framing my large, forest green eyes with black and stepped out of the bathroom to get dressed.

The feeling that I was forgetting something was still tickling the back of my mind..

I grabbed a pair of black, high waisted shorts and a gray, lacy crop top and put them on before throwing on my grey Vans.

I tiptoed down the stairs, not wanting to wake my father or brother. They both worked night shifts and slept while I was at school. I only had one more year before I would probably join them.

There was a note on the kitchen table next to a cupcake with a single candle. The note read:

'Dear Ella,

Happy birthday! Make a wish! Dad and I will see you tonight. We are going to take our lunch break and come home to give you your gifts. I love you sis! Sorry I couldn't say It to your face..

Love,

Brandon'

I sighed and smiled dejectedly. That's what I was forgetting. My eighteenth birthday. Brandon always tried his hardest but could never convince my father to 'waste time on such things'.

I flipped the paper over and wrote 'Thank you but you need the wish more than I do. Get some rest

Love,

Ella'

I grabbed my bookbag and my keys and headed to my car.

I pulled up to school and smiled.

School was the one place I felt at home. Sure there was the occasional drama, but I loved seeing my friends and goofing around.

The one downside was Chelsea Pillar. The whore of the school, she was constantly hanging onto Daniel McCutchen, who was gorgeous but just a bit too cocky for my tastes.

I was interrupted from my thoughts by a tap on my window. I jumped before realizing it was just my friend Charlie. He smirked as I opened the door, "Touchy, are we?"

I shoved his shoulders playfully and replied, "Ya never know Charles, a girl has to watch her back."

He frowned and faltered, as I knew he would at the mention of his full name, but recovered quickly.

He caught up to me with a few strides and ran his hand through his blonde hair nervously.

"Would you maybe..er..wanna go to the homecoming dance with me?"

I stopped in my tracks. We had been best friends since sixth grade, but lately Charlie had been getting a little bit close to more than friends. And I didn't like it.

"Umm..no thanks I'm uh..busy."

He laughed and put his arm around my shoulder ,"We both know you're not busy, but it's okay..I get it."

He looked morose for a moment and then shook it off. I was about to apologize when he said,"I'll talk to ya later Ells, I gotta go."

"Sure," I said quietly to his retreating back.

I heard a familiar growl behind me and spun around to come face to face with Daniel McCutchen himself.

I tried to peer past him to find the source of the growl from my dreams, but he blocked my path.

I looked up aggravated, my eyes traveled from the obvious six pack beneath his black t shirt to his ice blue eyes that were brightened in contrast with his jet black hair.

He was looking at me intensely, almost possessively.

"Uh..hi?" I asked more than said, stumbling under his gaze. He smiled and grabbed my hand, creating tingles up my arm and butterflies in my stomach.

"Go out with me tonight." He said, leaving no room for discussion. There we were having an almost moment and he just had to get bossy. Jocks, huh?

"Mm no thanks," I said sweetly and attempted to pull my hand away.

He tightened his grip on me and furrowed his eyebrows

"Why not ma-...Ella?" He asked, as if no one had ever told him no. Maybe they hadn't.

"You really need to learn how to ask a girl on a date, Daniel. The keyword is 'ask' . You don't 'tell' a girl on a date. So maybe when you can ask me nicely, I'll think about it."

He smirked, "Feisty huh?"

I yanked my hand out of his grip, successfully cutting off the sparks of electricity flying up my arm. And as I turned to walk away, I swear he whispered, "Mine."
