Mismatching with his small physique, his attitude were matured as he is the one who's responsible taking care of the smaller tantou before Ichigo Hitofuri arrived at the citadel.
And to add more of his matured traits, he is the one who responsible to cure every injured swords returning from batlle. you can called a doctor.

Responsible for taking care of the sick and injured, he always be found inside the repai room, making new medicine or researching new materials for curing sickness.
"Yagen-niisan, it is time to practice." Akita said sheepishly, while peeking from outside the repair room with Maeda and Hirano. Looking at them, he just smiled and said,
"Okay, I'll be there, just give me a second to put everything away." while his hands move nimbly, putting his medical equipment away.
Taking a deep breath, he finishes his job and gone to the training hall, where all of his brothers were waiting.
"Okay, go to your partner as I name you guys, Akita and Midare, Maeda and Gokotai, Atsushi and Honebami, Hirano and Namazuo, and lastly, Nakigitsune and Hakata." the brothers were very diligent and follow everything Yagen asked.
As the brothers facing their partners, Yagen signalled them to start duelling as he watched every brothers movement. It's a lot, but he used to it. You were watching from outside and walked to close your distance to Yagen's back, making him not realizing your presence.
Yagen was so small yet so independant. He took all the responsibilities taking care of his brother despite the amount of workload he had. Wooden sword clanking each other while the tantous practicing. You were leaning on the wall, smiling to see the improvement of the tantou's fighting.
'I might be able to dispatch these little tantous a lot in the future. Yagen really doing a great job teaching his brothers.' as you monologued in your heart.
Their 15 minutes session almost done. The brothers finishing up to take a rest before sparring with Yagen-niisan. From his back, you talked.
"Yagen, spar with me. Show your brother what you got." he surprised that his name was called and looking at you, smiling at him.
He nodded before readying himself in battle position. The Awataguchis were in awe as they never seen you fight before. Yagen also nervous as he don't know what kind of skill up on your sleeve.
You just smiling when he made his first move. Easily dodging his attack, you slide your body to the left before trying to aim on his back. Fast enough, he able to stop the attack. Holding the tantou wooden sword, he pulled himself out from your attack and reattempt to aim at you again.
15 minutes passed, both still going on without breathing heavily. Both of your stamina were great. This time, taking the offence, you swinging your sword to hit him in a few points, but he able to dodge every attack from you. He still could carry on counter attack after defending himself making him look cool and strong in front of his little brothers.
Another 15 minutes gone and now, both you and Yagen starts panting and sweating a lot. You initiate to stop sparring with Yagen. You wanted to show how Yagen techniques in real battle in front of his brother. He plopped down to the floor, trying to stabilize his breath while you walked to the small ones.
"Who wants to spar with me? I could teach you a thing or two." while chuckling at the little brothers fighting over who going to go first.
"Okay, everyone calm down. I teach everyone okay?"
