The Kindness in Shadows

Therapy Sessions
I fold my fingers in my lap as I look anywhere but Dr. Franklin, he’s eyes skimming across the clipboard. Dr. Franklin was not only my Therapist but my Doctor he says it amazing to have a patient as ‘special’ as me, I’m special according to him.
“Has everything been okay this past days that you haven’t seen me?” His voice snaps me out of my thoughts as I furrow my eyebrows. What’s that supposed to mean? I’ve always been okay, why would something be wrong?
“Everything has been normal, like always.” I say as I look at his brown eyes. His face examines my features as he writes down something on his paper. All my sessions have been recorded in a tape recorder and video camera which I found very weird as that’s what they do back at home.
“Have you talked to anyone this few days? Besides your doctors and nurses of course.” I nod sideways as I haven’t talked to anyone outside of building.
“Oh!” I shout as I remember talking to Finn, “I’ve been talking to Finn.” I say with a smile as he said he’ll meet me after I finish with this session.
“Finn? The same Finn that had been talking to you sense….the accident?” He asks as he settles his glasses on the bridge of his nose.
“His always been here.” I say looking at the camera on the left side of Dr. Franklin, “He says I don’t need help, that I’m perfectly okay and healthy. I don’t know what he means by that, you guys are all nice except when you tie me on my bed and give me medications I don’t need, I’m perfectly fine.” I say while looking at the gray hair on Dr. Franklin’s head.
“When did this Finn talked to you?” He asks as he studies me.
“He’s always talked to me, after and before the accident. He keeps me sane.” I say
I turn to my right as Finn seats a few feet away from me, “Right Finn?” I ask with a smile
“Marzia who are you talking to?”

I frown as nurse Sandy leads me to my room, the laughs and screams of people hearable through the walls and doors of the white hallway. Sandy pulls me towards the room that I’ve always come to hate, the one filled with posters of bodies, facts and instructions for certain disorders. A red thick cross sign is noticeable on top of a metal white door.
“Sandy, I don’t want another one.” I say trying to pull my hand out of her grip.
“Sweetie you have to.” She says while dragging me towards the door which opens as Dr. Gonzales steps out to meet Nurse Sandy.
The two ladies drag me inside as I struggle to get out, their grips hurting my arms and writs.
“I don’t want another shot!” I whine as they tie me on the bed that’s incredibly stiff and hard.
“Now, Now Marzia. It’ll just be a small amount of pain, you’ll feel better after it.” Dr. Gonzales says as she crunches up her face while grabbing the syringe from the small tray next to me.
“No! No! Stop!” I scream as Sandy holds my wrist out for Dr. Gonzales to stab me with the small long needle.
Sandy tightens the straps that hold me down as I try to get up, pain surges through me as I feel the needle push drugs into my system. I lay my head back on the bed as I feel uneasy, Dr. Gonzales long black hair swaying as she walks away to throw the syringe away.
I feel the straps off me, I hold on to Sandy as I try to regain my balance, my vision blurring. After my vision focuses I see Finn with a worried expression.
Mar, are you okay? Don’t let them hurt you.
I smile as he approaches me, his hand holding up my head. He looks back at Nurse Sandy and Dr. Gonzales his expression hardening, his jaw clenched.
“Finn is here, he isn’t happy.” I slur as I look at both the ladies in front of me.
“We should keep her in here to rest until Monday.” Dr. G says as she turns to Nurse Sandy as she just nods and walks out.

I pant as I open my eyes looking around me, I try to get up but miserably fail as straps hold my wrist in place, I struggle to get my hands out of the grip, the roughness of the fabric burning my skin, I sigh as I lay back down. I look at the straps that are tighten by a metal object similar to the one in a belt. I twist my hand to get my fingers to reach the leather straps. My fingers curl around the strap pulling out of the loop, I pull the other way to get metal small pole outside of the hole in the strap. I grin as I get the strap off my wrist, I twist my body to the other side to get the other strap off on left hand, after pulling the strap off I massage my hand with the right one and move down to my feet.
I jump off the bed and stretch making animal noises as I do so, I look around me already to find Finn pointing to a door on the further wall of the room, bold letters written over the door.
Closet
I walk over the closet, the cold titled floor sending shivers up my spine. I twist the doorknob open to find a bathroom and clothes that usually nurses would wear.
Today is the day. Put on the nurse clothes so we’ll head out of here.
I nod, stripping of the white robe, pulling on the white short dress, white tights surround my legs as I pull on white flats. I search around for things that could style my hair, after searching through a few cabinets I find enough hair objects to pull my hair in a bun.
I walk out of the closet, looking for something to protect me if I get caught by anyone.
Why don’t you use that syringe?
I snap my head to my right to find Finn seating on a chair close to me, I nod as I walk towards the counter, 3 syringe wraps left unopened seat on the counter. I grab a syringe opening it up and putting it inside my bun, hiding it well and being careful to not stab myself with it.
I open a few cabinets looking for an I.D. to let me pass through the doors. It feels like hours before I find one and head out the door, I look around finding the hallways empty and cameras surrounding the corners of hallways. I let out a breath before walking towards the exit which I memorized from the way that I watch the nurses leave as their shift is over. My feet paddle on the floor as I keep walking straight looking straight up, an exit sign coming into view as I approach it.
A black bold arrow pointing towards the front entrance, I walk over to the front doors that seem so close to my fingertips.
“Miss!” I hiss as I turn around to find a security guard, I smile at him as I walk towards him.
“Yeah?” I ask.
“You need to check out before you leave.” He says a smile forming into his lips.
“Oh, I’m sorry. I forgot all this stress and day shifts are wearing me out.” The words are out before I even have time to go through what I just said.
“Tell me about it, all this crazy people in here trying to escape and hurt the nurses, it’s crazy!” He says with a laugh.
I nod with a fake smile, cunt.
I sign out a fake name on the clipboard, I turn around to walk out but remember the building is located in the outskirt of town.
“Hey, umm can you lend me 20 dollars? I’ll pay you back I just need them.” I clap my hands together pleading.
“Sure! Do you need me to call a Taxi?” His voice is hope to my ears.
“That’ll be great! Thank You!” I say in my Italian accent.
He calls the taxi before handing me 20 dollars. I wave a goodbye before jogging outside into the warm weather. A few minutes past before the taxi arrives.
