All she could hear was the pounding in her chest as she ran through the bleak woods. The snow tip-toed down sky, and the leaves whispered through the wind.
God damn it. Jessabell thought, frantically snapping her fingers. The rhythmic thuds in the distance continued to shake the cracked earth. She whipped her hand across her face wiping the sweat and leaving a bloody smear on her porcelain face.
Thud, thud, thud. Tiny pebbles danced around her feet.
This was all her fault. That was the only thing she could think about as the blood dripped onto the snowy path. No matter how long she hid from reality, the truth caught up too her: it was her fault.
She snapped her fingers, and finally a light shown between her fingers. Thank the heavens! She pulled open a rectangular opening of light in front of her just as the troops came into her peripheral vision behind her. The troop cocked their guns and aimed for her head, and pulled the trigger in unison.
She could feel the sharp breeze from the bullets as she hopped through the tunnel.
"Augh!" She gasped as she landed on the floor of her sisters apartment.
