It can be stressful. When life decides to throw a curve ball. Just swing and miss? Swing and miss? Hit a Grand slam?I guess it triggers that fight or flight instinct humans have. And honestly. Fighting was the last thing on my mind I'm sure it's the last thing anyone would want to do. I'm not even sure how this situation came about. I was going through life enjoying high school, Now here I am, Falling to the concrete with a bullet wound. Pain blossoming from the wound and spreading across my body. The world seeming to fade away as pain consumes me. I hear someone call my name. The pain becomes so overwhelming I black out.
*Two Weeks Earlier*
"Mom! I'm home!" I called as I walked through the front door. Setting my keys on the shelf next to the door. I take my shoes off waiting on a response. Nothing? That's odd.
"Hellooooo?" I call out again. Nothing. I walk into the living room and everything is trashed. 'What the-' a dark figure emerges from upstairs and starts stalking towards me. I turn to run but they grab my arm. Hard.
"Help! Someone help me!" I call out but no response.
"I'm here to protect you, you can quit screaming now." The person hissed out.
"What?" I asked confused still trying to break my arm free. The person let go and I fell to the floor.
" Names Lance. I'm here to make sure you're safe. And right now you need to go upstairs and pack. We're leaving." They stated simply as I stood up. I looked him up and down. He was wearing a suit. No tie, but he had a rose in the front pocket. His hair was black and slicked back. His eyes were brown and seemed sincere. But something else seemed to hide in the back. After they finished talking I turned and tried to run again. Lance tackled me to the ground. Knocking the air out of my lungs. I struggled to regain my breath.
"We don't have time for this. You're mother is waiting for you. Our plane leaves in two hours and it's a thirty minute drive to the airport from here. You need to pack and get ready to leave." My mom?
"Where is she? Where's my mom!" Sighing he gets up and holds out a hand to help me up. Reluctantly I take his hand. Standing up I hear the house phone start ringing. Lance walks over and checks the caller ID. Picking it up silently and tossing it my way. I frown in confusion and answer
"Hello?"
"Ari, it's so good to hear your voice." I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Jay! God I was worried when I came home. Mom isn't here and I completely forgot about you having cheer practice tonight.." I said running my hand through my hair.
"I already know, I'm with mom at the airport. Is Lance there?"
"Yeah, what's going on??" I demanded a little annoyed.
She paused. I could feel her bitting her lip. She always did that when she was unsure of something.
"Jayden?" I asked
"Listen there's not much time, you need to pack and get on the plane. Mom and I are about to take off. Please be safe. And you knowing only puts you in more danger."
"But you know! And we're twins!"
"There's so much you don't remember.. please just go with Lance. We love you." As the line disconnects the power goes out. Lance swears as he grabs my arm and he pulls me up the stairs.
"You took too long. Get a bag together and we need to go. Now." Lance says as he pulls a knife from his jacket. He hands it to me silently and shoved me in my room. Slamming the door in my face I hear his footsteps retreating. Grabbing my gym bag I reluctantly start packing. Questions swarming my mind. 'What in the hell is going on??' 'What is Mom and Jay hiding from me..'After a few moments I was packed and ready to leave. There was a commotion coming from down stairs. I went to my door and slowly opened it careful not to make a noise. Just as I peaked my head around the corner someone came barreling through the door. I fell to the floor and started to crawl away from the stranger who found their way in my room. Smiling the guy scanned the room his eyes falling to me. Looking at me like I was his prey. I started crawling away trying to reach the window. He grabbed hold of my ankle and started dragging me back towards the door. I started fighting back. Kicking him in the face then the groin. He released my ankle, while he began to crumble, I delivered the final blow to his temple. He fell to the floor unconscious. I stared open mouthed at the man before me. Not waiting round to see if he had friends I grabbed my backpack and swiftly ran down the hall. I reached the top of the stairs and saw Lance in a battle with two other goons. What the hell has my life become. I heard a sound coming from the end of the hallway. The guy from earlier emerged from my room with a knife in his hand. My eyes widened as he started running towards me. Dropping my bag, I started backing down the hall towards the bathroom. He was too fast and he caught up. His body loomed over me.
His eyes looked at me with hatred. He swung the knife towards me and I held my arms up and pain erupted from my arm. Screaming as I fell back onto the floor. I felt his weight crush me as he raised the knife to deliver the final blow. I threw my hands up again to try and block the knife again. His weight was ripped off of me. I waited for a few moments and heard what seemed to be the sounds of fighting before it went silent. I stayed on the ground with my eyes closed. Someone lightly touched my arm, I opened my eyes to see Lance standing over me.
"Are you alright?" He asked as he helped me up. I leaned over to see what had happened and he moved to block my view. Shaking his head, " Close your eyes, and I'm going to go get your bag and we're leaving." I nodded, too shocked to really say anything else. Closing my eyes, I heard him get up and grab my bag and his foot steps approached. My arm started burning and throbbing.
"My arm..." I said not knowing what else to really say.
"Once we get to the car out back and leave I'll check it before we get on to the plane. There's things I don't want you to see. So keep your eyes closed and I'm going to carry you to the car." I nodded and felt something press to my cut. I let out an cry.
" Shit, I'm sorry. I need you to put this on it. And put pressure. We need the cut to stop bleeding." Nodding I reached for the object he placed on my arm. He handed it to me and I placed it on my arm. He picked me up and started walking. I felt him go down the stairs and I heard the door open which I assumed was the back door. Opening my eyes I saw the moon was in the sky and there was a car on the back street.
"Would you like me to set you down?" Lance asked as he brushed past the back gate. I shook my head. If he would've set me down I would've shaken all over and collapsed. Him holding me was the only thing holding me together in that moment. He opened the passenger door and set me down. He proceeded to put the seat belt on me then closed the door. Opening his door and throwing my bag in the back I noticed his jacket was gone and he was only in a button up shirt. His jacket was around my arm where the cut was and my blood was soaking the fabric making it unusable. I looked back over at him and he had blood splatters on his shirt. Then there was a giant blood spot where my arm was resting as he carried me. I started to feel hot tears rush down my face as he started the car. A sob broke lose as he hit the gas and we left my home, my car, and my whole life behind.
'What is gonna happen to us now?' I asked myself as I watched the street lights pass overhead.
"Are you alright?" Lance asked as he kept stealing glances at me in between concentrating on driving.
"I don't know.." I mumbled.
"There's a first aid kit in the glove box. We're almost to the airport. I'll bandage you up once we arrive."
Opening the glove box there was a first aid kit along with a gun. Coming up to the airport, my arm started burning and I felt light headed.
"Lance.." I said grabbing my arm then I blacked out.
