The bar was thumping with loud music heard over speakers that were everywhere, and the crowd was shoulder to shoulder these occurrences normal for a Saturday night. The roiling sea of bodies didn't deter Scarlett from her mission though, and her mission, bring a tray full of beers to a group of frat boys without spilling any on herself. A small feat you would say, but try bouncing and dodging bodies while balancing a tray of drinks in one hand while trying to keep yourself dry. Though Scarlett has had many years of practice, she still had troubles.
As she dodged the bodies of drunken people and swerved through the bars Saturday night traffic, she made it to the table of college boys and set their beers down on the table. They seemed to be already drunk, their eyelids droopy and their movements uncoordinated. But her job wasn't to tell them they already had enough alcohol she was only a bartender. And sometimes like right now while the other waitresses needed time off or needed a break she would step in for them.
"Well hey, there cutie." One of the people at the table said, his words slurring. They all looked as if waiting for a response from me I just laughed at him and walked away, I couldn't deal with this, it was time for me to get back behind the bar, as I walked back you could hear his friends all laugh and badger him because of my response to his flirting. To get back behind the bar, I had to lift part of the counter and slip under it.
"Back from the other side, I see." Said Genelle she was the only other bartender at Moe's Bar, and because of that, we have become great friends.
"Oh yeah so happy to be back," I said and glared, she was the reason I had to cover for one of the waitresses.
"What?!" I just crossed my arms in front of my chest silently waiting for her to realize why I was glaring. "Come on the only reason I made you do it was because I did it earlier." I knew it wasn't in any way her fault we were packed and short staffed.
"I know," I smirked.
"Ugh, I hate when you mess with me for no reason." She just started laughing and soon enough so did I. She knew that what she said was hypocritical, we always messed with each other for no reason. As we came down from our laughing high a few girls came up to the bar,
"can we get three rum and cokes, please?" Genelle answered hiccuping a little,
"of course, any with ice?"
"All of them."
I grabbed three glasses from below the counter and went to the ice chest, scooping ice into all of them. Then I grab the coke out of the mini fridge that also sits underneath the counter and the rum that sits on the shelves behind us. Remembering the 1:3 ratio for a rum and coke that I always use, you want your drink to taste good not like a straight shot. I pop a lime into each of the glasses and hand them to each of the girls. After they've paid, they saunter off towards a booth with other girls all dressed in stiletto heels and tight, or sparkly dresses, makeup piled on their faces and hair that's for sure to smell like it was chemically infused with hairspray a typical girls night out.
I turn back to Genelle, and she's helping out another customer, and it seems he only asked for a beer. Then she also turns towards me about to say something, until Moe comes out of his office headed straight for the bar. Yep, you've guessed he is the one who owns Moe's Bar, but he's not the original owner. His grandfather was, this bar is three generations old in the Davenport family but may or may not get to be four generations old. You see our seaside forest town that sits right on the on the coast of Delaware had the cliche most towns held, the notorious eligible bachelor, and ours was Moe. He had no wife and no kids, just this bar. But in consolation for the girls he beds, Moe isn't a heartless player. Genelle and I lean over the counter knowing Moe was heading over to talk to us and he does the same.
