Taylor:
The first thing I noticed when she said those words was how she said something, rather than someone. It shouldn't have surprised me at this point. Still, the fear that began to bubble up inside my stomach was terrible. Kat seemed all too scared for me to even consider this being a prank, which I had hoped in the first place. But then a sound came from close by, and I knew. Kat was dead serious.
It was low, almost like a whisper, and eerie against the silence of the night. I felt my heart plummet downward. I wondered if I even dare look at Felix and Kat. Carefully, very slowly, I spared a glance.
Felix, I could tell, was trying hard to hide his worry. Kat looked like she was on the verge of tears.
It sounded again, this time, closer. It rumbled the bones inside my body, sending a shiver up my spine. It almost sounded wounded, like it was in desperate need of something. Normally, I would have been more curious with a sound of desperation, but I knew I didn't need any curiosity for this one because I knew this sound came for something dangerous.
"What do we do," I managed. My words were carefully pushed out with a long exhale to keep from being too loud.
"I don't know," Kat replied. Her eyes darted nervously around our surroundings, and I couldn't help but admire the slight amount of light they produced. It was comforting in a way.
Felix finally spoke up. His voice sounded ragged, and wavered slightly with his suggestion, "stay put. Don't move. It should go away soon enough."
"Felix, it knows we're here-"
"Don't move," he repeated with more urgency.
We did as he said and stayed put. My legs were aching from the position I was sitting it, but I didn't dare move. I barely even breathed. Blinking felt terribly dangerous, so I resisted even that.
Again, the creature sounded. It was even closer. For a moment, I thought it might even be standing directly behind me, its breath tickling my neck. It's just the wind, I had to remind myself over and over again, to keep from not crying out. Just the wind.
Kat stirred next to me. I darted my eyes to her, warning her not to move anymore. She nodded slightly, squeezing her eyes shut for a moment. Then, before I could stop her, she reached out her hand in order to steady herself, putting too much pressure on a twig. It cracked through the silence, rippling through the whole forest.
We all froze. Nobody blinked. Nobody breathed. We all just stared at each other, Kat's eyes welling up with tears.
The creature sounded again, however, this time it sounded angry. No, pissed off to the extreme. I noticed, also, it really was right behind me this time.
"Taylor!" Felix shouted.
We all bolted up from our positions, backing away from where the source of the sound stood. I didn't even know if what I was seeing was real.
A figure, somehow darker than the night itself, standing in the middle of the trail. Its eyes, different from the rest of its body, were pure silver, flowing with what seemed to be liquid metal. I found myself getting lost in its eyes. They were mesmerizing. For some odd reason, they brought a sense of peace my way, and for a moment, I forgot where I was.
That is, until, Kat pulled me back into reality with a shout of panic.
The creature rang through our ears with whispers of terrible things, the whispers almost like shouting. I could faintly make out a few of its words. Worthless. Mistake. Unloved. Psychotic. Emotionless. Those last words hit me hard. I wondered if they were specifically meant for me.
