Part One
"Hello?"
"Catherine, I'm so sorry I had to call you again sooner than when we're supposed to talk. But be assured I am not giving you any ill news this time."
"It's alright. Why did you call?"
"I need to remind you about something... You may know what I am referring to."
"No. Please, no. Don't even— not after what happened with Kyle."
"Catherine, you know it's for the better."
"What, putting their lives in danger is for the better? They don't even know the truth!"
"What part of the truth?"
"Everything. Kyle and I decided not to tell them."
"And how will you explain his death?"
"I'll make something up. Just please... they can't go."
"You know they have the choice. They can either stay or go. But every single decision you make is affecting theirs in a way you can't begin to imagine, Catherine."
"Holter, I'm a mother. Do you think I care about this right now? All I need to know to keep myself happy for the next ten years is that they're safe. And if they go, they won't be the tiniest bit safe."
"But you know you have to tell them the truth one day or another."
"Then what's the purpose of that law the Council passed allowing parents to hide their origin from their kids?"
"THE LAW DOESN'T MATTER CATHERINE! Kara and Conner deserve to know where they came from and what they are and what happened to their father. Listen, Catherine, you know the Dumetolire inside them is too strong to contain. Goodness knows what could happen to them! I don't care what you say, when they're of right age, I will be calling you to remind you to tell them. You must, Cath. It's for their benefit."
"Don't call me Cath."
