Ellie had started carrying at least three books in her arms in school since she was ten, when she watched her first high school movie. It had paid off. Kind of.
When Ellie was 16, someone bumped into her in the hallway and she tripped, dropping her books and papers.
Okay, she had thought. Not ideal, I'd rather someone have pushed me. But this is your day, Ellie.
She waited, taking a very long time to pick up one of her books. A voice chimed behind her, "Let me help you with that."
That was not the voice of a hot jock. It was a girl. "Thanks," she grumbled, grabbing the books swiftly. The girl's pale blue eyes swirled with confusion, but she just shrugged it off and walked away.
The halls were nearly empty now, so Ellie sighed and just made her way to class. A few moments later, she heard footsteps behind her, following her. "Wait!" someone called. It was a boy this time. Ellie grinned merrily, but the corners of her mouth turned down when she saw who it was.
Greg, like Ellie, was a nerd. But not the cute kind, the disgustingly dorky kind. He smiled a crooked smile and said, "You dropped this." Greg handed her math homework with her name written in swirly lettering at the top.
"Wow, thank you," Ellie said. She took the paper and left without another word, leaving Greg in the hallway, confused.
