Prologue
"What exactly are these keys?" The android turned up gravel as it traveled alongside it's master.
"Artifacts from the old earth." Romulus drank from his canteen and took a breath, the prufifed war giving new life to his desert dry throat.He gazed at the forest below them. Birds chirped and dive into the mist that hung over the top of the forest.
"And is there a reason why you did not tell the other Solar Union bureaucrats about this trip?"
Romulus groaned. "You've seen what the Solar Union has become. Once a bastion of hope for the future of mankind, now I fear it is becoming a tyranny." He threw a stone off the cliff side. Rain began to fall from the sky. First drop by drop then without warning, it started to pour without mercy.
"I suggest we find shelter, sir." The android pointed it's metal finger towards a cave off the path. "Over there, my visual scanners detect a cavern in which we can take shelter in."
"Lead the way!" The pair diverted from the trail and made a dash down the hill. Romulus's boots slipped in the mud. He cursed as he tumbled down the hill, mud pouring and covering his face.
"Damn!" He slide off the hill and rolled in front of the mouth of the cave. The wind was howling as rain came down relentlessly upon Romulus. He wiped grimey mud off his eyes and dashed towards the cavern entrance.The android walked in the cavern. The rockwall was illuminated by the fledgling fire.
"May I ask what is this key?" The android asked.
Romulus breathed and withdrew the key from his bag. The key was not really a literal key rather a slim thin rectangle. With the press of a button the rectangle displayed a scroll. Romulus breathed in and read it aloud. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness." Romulus shed a tear.
He shed a tear.
"The Solar Union is heavily industrial and military society that currently field one thousand space cruisers, ten million tanks, eight million fighter craft , and twenty million soldiers." The Android said. "It's military forces are lead by the best minds in the galaxy and manned by the soldiers who are cram packed with cybernetic implants that make them far superior than any normal human. What value does this 'key' have that defeat such an army?"
"Hope." Romulus said. "Hope ."
Chapter I: The Soldiers Came to School
Summer.... I always hated the summer. Summer is when the dust made like great herds of cattle. Summer is when the heat rose like mother's stove. Summer is when the sun glared like a watchful eye with all it's light. Summer was when I lost it all. She'd never admit it, but mother lost it all in summer too. Father was murdered during a summer long ago; Patrick Greene was a great man, as I've been told. Mother says he died before I was born, but he knew I was coming. He was the one who gave me my name: Aurora Greene.
