the dark-haired boy led them to a platform on the other side of the beach. a group of other boys, ranging from jenna's age to toddlers, were all sitting around a small campfire. one of the boys, a tall, brown haired boy, stood up.
"where've you been?" he asked, sounded annoyed, "we had to start the meeting without—why do you have a knife?"
jenna laughed to herself at this. the boy looked around at her, then at alex, then declan.
"roger, who is that?" he asked the boy with the knife, still peering around him, his eyes still adamantly fixed on the three of them.
the boy with the knife — roger — began to say something, but jenna quickly cut across him.
"our plane—our plane crashed. i think we were shot down. we're the only survivors. our only choice was to come to shore here, or else we would've drowned." she explained.
one of the smaller boys that sat round the campfire looked to the boy next to him and said, "i told you it wasn't a shooting star!"
jenna laughed and turned her attention back to the tall boy. "i'm jenna. this is alex," — she gestured to the brown-haired girl— "and my brother declan," — she tilted her head towards declan. "who are you? where are the adults?"
"i'm ralph," the boy said with a small smile. "there aren't any adults. we crash-landed here, too. there was a pilot but he's gone, now, and we think he's dead. i'm...kind of the leader here. like a chief. it's just us boys."
"no girls in the tribe!" yelled one of the smaller boys. the kids around him giggled.
"girls? where?" a boy with blond hair and grey eyes popped up from the group of boys. he was cute, and seemed like he was around their age. jenna smiled as he clambered over to them.
"jesus, i was starting to worry that i was gonna have to shack up with old rog over here," he said with a laugh, gesturing to his dark-haired friend roger. "i'm jack. i'm the real chief around here."
"no you're not!" ralph protested.
"that's not what literally every kid on the island says," jack retorted.
ralph rolled his eyes. "they picked me to be chief. he's having a hard time accepting it." he said to jenna and alex.
declan seemed to have wandered away; after a quick search he was found sitting amongst a few of the younger boys. they were introducing themselves to him, talking excitedly and giggling. declan was easily the oldest boy there, and if this was everybody, he was the oldest person on the island. probably the most responsible too.
she smiled to herself and nudged ralph with her elbow. "you'd better watch out, he'll steal your chieftaincy," she said playfully.
ralph laughed but didn't say anything.
jenna found herself gazing around, the ocean and miles of sand on her left, the forest on her right. it was beautiful. like a paradise.
ralph broke the silence. "how much of the island have you seen? jack and his 'hunters' have explored some of it but there's no way we've seen all of it."
"just the beach," alex piped in, "we've only just got here."
the sun was coming up over the east side of the island; everything looked golden now.
"will you show us?" jenna asked. she wondered if it should've been weird for the boys on the island to be so accepting of them so quickly, but her brain turned to other things and she decided she didn't care.
"sure, jack can come too," ralph said. he beckoned the blond boy back over to them.
"can't we, like, rest first?" alex asked. "i'm exhausted, aren't you?"
"no." she answered softly, "i wanna see this island."
