"Aya-senpai!", Kageyama greets far too loud while bowing.
Slightly annoyed, she shakes her head before passing him.
"I told you a hundred times that 'senpai' is not necessary ..."
"You know her Kageyama?!"
"Shut up Hinata!"
Without even paying attention to the two, she sits down next to Shimizu, who greets her with a warm smile. Even though it may still be so contrary to her nature, she returns the smile. Shimizu has always been nice to her and was always eager to start a conversation.
Not a minute later, the door flies open again. A young coach arrives and starts the training immediately.
"That's all for today! Good work."
Aya breathed with relief, inwardly she already thought that this practice would never end. Coach Ukai and Takeda-sensei talked to her during practice. Both had the hope that Aya was a fan, which would mean that the volleyball club would finally gain recognition. But to their resentment she had to deny this.
"Before you all go ...", the Daichi clears his throat, "For all those who don't know her yet, this is Aya. She will be back at the volleyball club and help with the training and organization."
The said person falls into a state of shock. She never agreed to that. It is true that she actually helped out before her absence. However, she didn't intend to continue. Hopefully, she turns her head to the two authority figures in this room, who just look satisfied. Daichi must have asked for permission before his announcement. Even as she turns her head to the other members of the Karasuno volleyball team, she does not see anyone suggesting a protest or something similar. Her fate seems to be sealed...
Silently, she joins the group on their way home. Tanaka and Nishinoya close to her. In a more than loud tone and with weird sound effects they try to tell her everything that happened in during her absence. Without talking back, she tries to comprehend their weird stories. Somehow, after all, it was her own fault.
The farther they go, the more the group shrinks. After a while, only Aya and Daichi are left. An awkward silence spreads. Aya tries to ignore it as good as possible.
"See you tomorrow ..." she says as she reaches her house.
"Aya"
His expression softens as he looks her in the eye.
"If you ever want to talk about it, you can come to me anytime. I'm there for you."
With that phrase, he puts his hand on her head and ruffles her hair. Slightly annoyed, she begins to straighten her hair again as she notices his happy smile which he has now put on his lips. Once again she is reminded that her disappearance must have hurt them...
After a short farewell, he disappears into his house, which is located next to hers. Just when he has disappeared from her field of vision, her cell phone rings.
The first night back in her old home was shorter than expected for Aya. Although she has slept for a long time, she feels like she has done an allnighter. Accordingly, her mood turns out.
So she opens the front door and sighs. She already wants this day to end. But just when she wants to get going, she discovers someone. Actually, she would now try to pass him unnoticed, but she has the feeling that this would break his heart. Carelessly, she drops the front door into the lock. Immediately he turns his head in her direction. A big smile on his lips.
"Good morning, Aya."
Probably every other person would get on her nerves this morning, but Sugawara, despite his good mood, does not manage to worsen her mood.
Instead of answering him, she raises her hand in a greeting manner and without saying another word, the two go in the direction of Karasuno. She immediately notices that he must have something on his mind. After all, it is not normal for him to make the extra detour to pick her up.
"How did you like our training yesterday? We have promising new first years, right? "
That was definitely not what he wanted to talk about...
"You all have improved," she begins, "So far the new ones look like work for me..."
A soft laugh escapes his throat.
"They are not that bad. Kageyama seems to know you too, so know what a level we have this year."
This statement is merely commented by her with an annoyed eye roll. Inwardly, she hopes that Kageyama's attitude has changed, but she does not want to deepen this conversation. She is aware of what first graders trigger. If they are skilled enough, they can be placed as starters and thus replace the people in their third and last year. And with Kageyama's abilities, it is very likely that he will be picked instead of Sugawara. To know that must be hard for him... She doesn't worsen the situation.
"I think these guys fit in the team. After all, you're just as exhausting as them, "she nods.
Sugawara's smile only widens.
"Maybe you're right."
On the way to school the two keep silent. He knows that she is not a talkative person. He just enjoys the silence with her. Even if he felt uncomfortable when he waited in front of her house, he is glad that he did it. For some reason, although she does not really want to, she is always surrounded by people. Almost aloof. He knows that he is one of the few people she would call a "friend", but after she disappeared without a word ... Maybe they are not as close as he always thought. Actually, he thought that she would always talk to him, just as he always talks to her about everything.
Deep in his thoughts, he only realizes that they have already arrived when she lightly pulls his sleeve.
"See you later at -"
"I missed you."
Irritated, she turns to him, but he does not return her gaze. His voice sounded sad, almost lonely. But just as she opens her mouth to say something, his usual cheerful expression returns.
"Do not be late, or Daichi will be angry again," he warns her rather amused and disappears in the direction of his classroom.
"Don't remind me ..." she sighs.
She can really do without that...
