MADISON

i stayed silent, not replying to matty for the rest of the detention and thinking about where to start, what to say.
"i wanted to see you, matty" i finally piped up as he walked me home and we winded through a few trees. "but you know we couldn't see each other again after what happened..." i kept my head tilted to the floor as i felt his eyes burning into me.

"but you're with me now" i looked up at his smug expression, my brows furrowed.
"wayne can't find out about you moving back" i kept my voice serious and monotone. "you know what he'd do..." my eyes wandered back to the pavement as matty sighed before moving his hand to my lower back. my head snapped up at the contact but i realised we were crossing a road and he cautiously looked for cars before leading me over.

i smiled to myself as matty let go and we were on the other side.
"i've missed all the little things you used to do" i mumbled as we turned down a quiet lane and i glanced back at him.
"fuck sake mads, it's killed me" he stopped walking and turned to me, chewing his lip as he studied my face. "i called and messaged for months, i knew i couldn't go back to your house- wayne would've killed me" he pushed his hair back in frustration, tugging at it as he did.

i watched his eyes flicker from mine and back to my lips, his brows tilted intently and his mouth slightly ajar. i'd missed him so much.

but i couldn't kiss him. i couldn't fall into bad habits again.
"i'm sorry" i quickly wrapped my arms around him, hugging him as tightly as i could. his warm arms were wrapped around my small body and i'd never felt more relieved... just to see him again.

we stayed there for some time, matty mumbling a few things every few seconds and squeezing me a little harder.
"well.." he parted from me, wiping his slightly watery eyes and i giggled at how soft he was. "i'm glad we're alright, mads" he half smiled, pushing a piece of my hair behind my ear just as it started spitting with rain.

"do you have to go home?" matty started shrugging his blazer off, and then his jacket.
"no, not for a while" he handed me his jacket before pulling his blazer back on as i held it above my head, the rain gradually becoming stronger.

"quick, let's get to mine" he gently pulled me along as we ran through the rain, his jacket eventually soaked through and we were both dripping before we got to his house.

we stumbled into the familiar hall of his big house, the only sound being our heavy breathing and the patter of rain outside.
"everyone's out" matty muttered through breathes. "let's go get changed" he laughed lightly, taking my wet hand in his as we walked upstairs. my eyes wandered over the walls covered in photos and the flowery wallpaper that i'd gotten used to seeing every friday.

we got to matty's room and i silently sat on his bed as he searched through his wardrobe before throwing a pair of jeans and a shirt next to me.
"i just need a piss so you can get changed in here" he breathed, looking down at his wet shirt that stuck to his skin. he pulled it off as he walked out, closing the door and leaving me alone in the room where we'd made so many memories.

i began undressing as my phone buzzed on his bedside table, i'd managed to keep it dry on the way. i looked down at it, the screen lit up with chloe's photo.
"hello?" i pressed the phone to my ear, tugging my school skirt off with my other hand.
"maddy?" chloe's voice echoed on the other end as i tried to pull my tights off. "where are you? i thought you were coming to mine"

i threw my clothes on the floor as everything flooded back to me, id told chloe i would go round hers after detention.
"shit, sorry chlo" i ruffled my damp hair, sighing. "i'm currently sitting half naked on matty's bed" i whispered as i heard chloe gasp.

"what?!" i smirked at her reaction before attempting to tug matty's jeans on. "maddy, are you joking? you can't start doi-"
"of course i'm joking, twat face" i giggled. "it started raining so i'm at his house, getting changed"

i heard her sigh with relief as i held the phone between my shoulder and ear, hopping up and down as i pulled matty's jeans on.
"well, be careful maddy... for fucks sake, just be careful" i rolled my eyes, taking the phone in my hand again. "last time you messed around with him, both of you got hurt so please-"

"i'm not gonna shag him chloe- i'm literally just sitting in his room" i undid the last of my shirt buttons, shrugging one sleeve off of my shoulder as the door opened and matty waltzed in.
"matty!" i dropped my phone, pulling my shirt across my chest as matty slammed the door shut again, muttering a quick 'sorry'.

i sighed, laughing it off a little.
"i have to go" i quickly muttered to chloe, cutting off her sentence as i repeatedly pressed end on my phone and put it on matty's pillow. i changed out of my shirt, quickly pulling his white top on.

"you can come in now" i called as i rolled the bottom of matty's jeans up and he walked in again, smirking like a dork.
"sorry mads" he laughed, scratching the back of his neck and biting his lip. "i should've knocked" he threw his wet clothes in his laundry basket before looking back up at me, holding a piece of paper in his hand.

"i drew this in physics" he flicked it onto the bed and i picked it up. i unfolded it, showing a pen drawing of a funny-looking man and a speech bubble next to him, reading "what the feck is goin' on?!". i suddenly burst into laughter, realising it was supposed to be wayne after he'd found matty on top of me in my room. my cheeks burned at the memory as matty sat next to me, sniggering.

"you shouldn't joke about it" i smiled, folding it up again and shoving it in my pocket. "he gave you a black eye, matty" i looked at him again as he rolled his eyes and pushed his hair back.
"my mum never found out" a smug expression covered his face as his eyes trailed over me. "just told her i got into a fight..." his voice quietened as he spoke about the last time we'd seen each other and i sighed.

"i hate him" i whispered, angry that he made matty leave and i felt his warm hand on mine.
"your hands are frozen" he laughed, trying to change the mood as i grabbed my phone and hopped up off of his bed. "my shirt looks so good on you" he stood up as well, going in the top drawer of his bedside table and pulling out a scratched blue tin.

"you smoke?" he raised his brows intently, walking past me and out of the room as i followed.
"weed?" i pulled the bottom of his shirt, tucking it into the jeans. "a few times" we walked down the stairs and through the kitchen to the back door, not much had changed since last year. we went into the cabin at the back of the garden, all the boys' instruments were hung around the room and a few chairs sat in the corner.

matty opened his tin, putting papers and weed out on the table and started rolling two joints.
"how much should i pay you?" i chewed my lip a little as i sat back, putting my phone on the table.
"i'm sure you'll pay me back" he smirked, winking at me. heat crept onto my cheeks although i knew he was joking.
"no, matty, we can't start shit like that again" i laughed nervously as he pushed his hair back before licking the paper and muttering that it was a joke.

he passed me one before taking his own in his lips, lighting mine first.
"just copy me, i'm a pro" he mumbled with the joint in his mouth, lighting it and sucking on the end, inhaling and then blowing it out again.
"i'll stand outside and do it" i mumbled, last time i did it i'd coughed my lungs up. i went to the door, fresh air hitting my face, before warily inhaling from the end and blowing the smoke out.

"oh" i giggled, surprised that i didn't have the same reaction this time. "it's not that bad" i inhaled again, a cloud of smoke in my eyes.

"who's alex?" matty finally said something as i turned around and he was holding my phone, alex's picture lighting up the screen.
