The sun was a crimson red, and I could see the skulls of the dead burning eternally in the depths of the flames. All the clouds had gone after the UV rays penetrated through the sky. I saw heat and anger but nothing else.
Awake. Blink. Blink. Blink. Yawn. Cough. Cough. Cough. Gag. Smoke. Soot.
I looked up. Gazing around, crows started to circle around me. My mouth was so dry. There was a continuous ringing in my ears even as I stood. So far, I was in what looked like a parking lot in the middle of the desert. There was no kind of transportation around.
I blinked my eyes a bit faster and stopped. It was bare and desolate except on the horizon where there was a really odd-colored cactus. Oddly, there wasn't a road near the lot. I took a deep, deep, deep breath and exhaled.
"Who builds a parking lot in the middle of nowhere!?"
I sighed and staggered groggily towards the cactus. The crows followed. It was slow progress, but I got closer eventually. I examined it at an angle. Wasn't what I thought it was. More like a giant, bumpy pickle stained pink and planted into the ground. Weird.
I circled it. The crows stayed on the ground a few feet away and stared. On the other side was a pair of light pink sunglasses jabbed into the side of the "pickle". Hmmm. I thought I was the only one out here. I took it out and placed it on my face. Fits well. Looking back at the "pickle", I saw a red ooze slowing travelling down the pink side.
"Probably best to not touch that."
I started to wonder if it was edible. I touched the side of the "pickle", and my hand wouldn't come off.
I turned my head towards the crows and sighed, " Did you guys know this was going to happen?"
I turned back, and the "pickle" had opened a bit. The next millisecond, it swallowed me whole.
It grew a darker shade of pink.
The sky was blue. The sun was shining just perfectly normal. The crows flew back to the parking lot.
