Chapter One:

"Now look what you've done! You've gotten us completely lost!" I yelled at my best friend, Megan.

"Hey, that's not fair! It's not my fault you forgot the Sat Nav!"

"Yeah, but you said you knew the way without it!"

"Look, we're not going to get anywhere if we can't stop arguing. Let's try and work together for now and we can carry on arguing at the hotel!"

I sighed, but nodded in acceptance. She was right; we weren't going to get anywhere if all we could do was argue. We really needed to get moving if we wanted to be at the hotel before dark.

It was our gap year from university, and we had decided to travel around England for the year. We lived in London, and were driving down to Plymouth to visit some friends. However, Megan had taken a wrong turn and we had ended up stuck in the Middle Of Nowhere. To make it worse, both of our phones weren't picking up reception so we couldn't even call for help.

 “Hey, Alice?” Megan said..

 “Yeah?”

“Look over there!” She said, pointing.

I glanced over to see a small hill, at the top of which was a tiny wishing well and a sign.

“Want to have a look?” I asked.

Megan gave me a ‘Duh’ look, then got out of the car and walked off without answering.

Following after her, I noticed that there was a narrow path from the well and down the other side of the hill. It looked vaguely like what you would imagine a fairy path to look like, with its gold-painted pebbles which lined both sides.

“That’s a bit strange,” I muttered to myself under my breath, “I wonder where that leads to...”

When we arrived at the top of the hill (which, admittedly, didn't take very long), I walked over to the well and peered down into it. The bottom was lined with coins, some of which seemed to be from different countries.

In order to read the sign, I stepped slightly to my left.

Congraulations! You have found the Countryside Well.

Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, fairies blessed this site with a Wish-Granting Spell. Soon after that, a well was built and news quickly spread of people throwing in coins, making a wish, and it coming true soon after.

Don't believe it? Prove us wrong then! Toss in a coin, make a wish, and if it doesn't come true you can tell everyone you know that it doesn't work! Go on, what have you got to lose?"

"That's probably the least boring sign I've ever read!" I said to Megan, chuckling.  However, I soon stopped laughing when I saw the serious look on her face.

"We should make a wish! Got any change?"

"Wait, you don't actually believe it do you?"

"Look, like the sign says, what have we got to lose?" She said, giving me a hopeful look.

Rolling my eyes, I rummaged in my pockets for change. I found two one pound coins and gave one to Megan.

"Yay! Thank you!" She said, grinning at me in an almost creepy way.

"Whatever," I said, shaking my head.

Megan skipped back over to the well, closed her eyes for a few seconds and then dropped the coin into the murky water. She then turned around, smiled at me and then announced that she was going to wait in the car. I nodded, slightly confused at the strange look in her eyes. I wonder what she wished for...

I slowly stepped towards the well and closed my eyes. For a second my mind is blank, and then it comes to me. What else would I wish for?
