-10th century-
A young girl with vibrant strawberry blond hair walked through the village her green-ish dress rippling behind her. Forest green eyes searching through the people around her in hopes of spotting a head of golden blonde hair which belonged to her friend. Not seeing her friend anywhere she made her way to the river, a spot she knew Rebekah would be at when not in the village. And sure enough, when in a distance from the river where she could hear the rush of water she saw another girl, same age as her, sitting on a rock in her blue dress while making a flower crown.
"Rebekah!" she exclaimed hoping to catch her friends attention as she sat next to her.
"Hello Lydia, how can I help you?" Rebekah's sweet voice carried through the air of the forest they were sitting in.
"Have you once again forgotten that you were supposed to wait for me in the village so we could go to the river together?" Lydia asked her in a scolding tone but the smile playing on her lips was a clear sign of the fact that she was just playing around. But seeing Rebekah's sad expression the smile was quickly wiped away from her face and replaced with a concerned expression.
"Rebekah what is the matter? Has something happened?" she asked worry evident in her voice. It was almost like a switch was flipped as tears started rolling down Rebekah's cheeks making Lydia wrap her friend in a soothing hug.
"How can our father be so cruel? Niklaus has done nothing wrong and yet he beats him over and over again for mistakes he forgives the rest of us." Her words were a little hard to understand because of her sobbing but Lydia understood her perfectly, after all this was certainly not the first time this has happened. She was about to comfort Rebekah when she decided to continue.
"I stood up to him. I stood against our father for Niklaus and I'm scared Lydia, yet I do not regret my actions." Rebekah admitted as her sobbing ceased to barely audible sniffling. Lydia's heart warmed and also broke at Rebekah's braveness.
"Rebekah, you are possibly the bravest person I know. But from you stories about him, Niklaus must be worth it."
"Oh Lydia you would love him, I'm sure you two would get along well. You must meet him, and also Elijah, and Kol and-"
"Alright! I will meet all your brothers Rebekah, do not worry." Lydia interrupted her friend with a joyful laugh.
The two friends relished in the calming feeling of the cool wind blowing through their hair, neither of them knowing that after the night which was to come they would not see each other for a very long time.
- that night-
Lydia shot up from her bed with a gasp, cold sweat running down her back. As if in some kind of trance she got up from her bed, exited her house and made her way through the forest. Her bare feet hit the leaves with every step she took until she arrived in a clearing. A clearing where a body laid, ripped to shreds with blood seeping out of it's numerous wounds. Her father's body.
