The vision was blurry, like looking through smudged lenses. It was of Emily— or at least a girl that looked like her— and a young man standing in the center of a clearing somewhere in a forest she did not recognize.

The pair was locked in an embrace, revealing an obvious connection between the two. No matter how much she strained to see, Emily still could not make out the man's face clearly enough. All she did note was that he was very tall, and strong. His arms nearly covered the girl he held.

But somewhere in the distance, a thundering of footsteps could be heard just beyond the tree line. A rise of panic began to spread through Emily as she attempted to warn the pair of danger. She screamed and screamed but to no avail.

The footsteps finally emerged from the forest and what Emily saw before her was not something she ever expected to see.

She let out a blood-curling cry.

"Emily, Emily!"

A deep voice tore her from the terror along with the feeling of a cold hand pressed firmly against her forehead.

Her eyes parted to reveal Emmett standing over her, and around him the rest of the class.

The heat rose within her at the realization that from now on, she would be known as the 'weird new girl'.

"Are you alright?" Emmett asked, "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Emily half-smiled, sitting upright. The action made her nauseous.

"I think I need to go to he nurse." She mumbled.

Mr. Dane, who stood over Emmett, nodded.

"Yes I think that's a good idea. Emmett, why don't you take her."

Emmet grinned. "Sure thing, Dane."

He stretched out a hand for Emily to take, which she did. Despite his cold skin, he helped her get to her feet, allowing her time to lean against him for support from the dizziness she felt.

When they were finally out of the room and into the hallway, Emily muttered: "Thanks."

She rubbed her face, hard. Of course when she finally sat next to the cute guy in class her body decided to freak out on her. It was like her unconscious was trying to ruin her reputation.

"Don't mention it. You probably just couldn't handle my spark." He grinned, wiggling his long fingers at her.

Emily fought the urge to roll her eyes.

Emmett pretended to be hurt. "What? You don't think so?"

Her lips parted into a reluctant smile. So he was funny, too.

She turned her chin up to meet his gaze since he was practically a tree on legs. His eyes were playful when they met, a burning amber color. How strange, she had never seen eyes that exact color before now.

"Maybe I just found you so repulsive that my body just shut down to get away?" She hummed.

A laugh echoed through the hallway.

"Oh now you're just being a dick." Emmett chuckled, pausing to open the office door for her.

Coyly, Emily shrugged and stepped through, noticing the double doors which had 'nurse' printed on them. She turned to Emmett and thanked him.

"Sorry you had to witness that. It won't happen again."

Emmet shrugged her off, stuffing his hands into his jean pockets. His eyes scanned her from head to toe, making her cheeks burn for the second time today.

"That's too bad." He said with a wink. "I was almost flattered at the fact that I could make a girl like you faint by just touching her."

If her skin wasn't so tan, Emily swore she'd be crimson by now. She forced herself to look away as he slipped out back into the hallway and out of view. Maybe she was going to like this school after all.

"Emily! Thank God, I thought something terrible happened to you." Rick gasped, running his hands over her face. "C'mon were going home."

Emily didn't put much of a fight, especially after the attack. Her father seemed on edge anyway, probably from his work.

She followed him out into the school parking lot, after the nurse cleared her for the rest of the day and the next if she needed it. But Emily felt fine now, good, even.

Rick paused to open the truck door for her, tossing her book bag into the back. But before Emily could lean into the cab, out of the corner of her eye she saw a figure at the edge of the lot.

When the door slammed shut and her father climbed in, she pressed her nose against the glass to see a large figure standing just at the end of the tennis court. And although she had only met him once before, Emily knew it was Emmett.

Despite herself, she offered a faint finger wave at him, to which he returned.

Her father drove home after that.
