Chapter Three

I look over and see Asher is facing the other way. I'm assuming he's asleep, so I try to be at least a little quiet. I grab my bag and swing it over my shoulder. I head into the kitchen with the mission to grab some sort of  food to eat on our road trip. Of course my dad is in some huge rush that doesn't allow for food to be consumed, so I end up grabbing a fiber one bar- which I'm not even sure why we have- and an apple. Such a great and nutritious breakfast.

We couldn't be going too far, what with Asher still back at the house alone in all.

"So, any idea where we're gonna head to?' I ask. I sit up in the front seat of his old Jeep Cherokee from the really early 90s, back when he was in high school. He adores the piece of junk. If something gets between my dad and his car, crap goes down.

Once he accidentally parked in a tow zone at the grocery store. He came out to see that his precious car was gone and he started freaking out. He eventually got it back, obviously. Neither Asher nor I were even alive then, though, so we're not exactly sure what actually happened. He had told us about it, me mainly, but he could've altered it to make him sound less dramatic and more manly.

"Just sit back and you'll see when we get there." He put the key in the ignition and started it up. It was a little rough sounding and took a few seconds before the engine started up correctly making it not sound like it was about to fart.

"Okay..." I wasn't really sure if I should fall asleep and trust my dad or just pretend to be asleep and watch where we're headed through the window. Of course being the idiot I tend to be, not even five minutes went by from me pretending to be asleep before I fall asleep for real.

I opened my eyes to see the sun beginning to rise. We left around 3 am so I couldn't have slept for more than about three or four hours. The car's clock has been broken since 2002, so that was of no use to me. I couldn't check my phone since it was in my bag that I'd stupidly thrown in the trunk. We were still on the road, which meant that we were still not at this destination yet. Where the heck could we have been going that was a few hours out of the city. To be honest we were probably out of the state by now. Was Asher up yet?

I stretched as I sat up. I looked out the windshield to see an open road with no other cars around. It was just me and him. Yay.

"Oh, good, you're up. I was beginning to think you were gonna be knocked out the whole drive." He looked over at me and then back at the road a few times as he talked. The majority of his speech I ignored. Not on purpose, I was just in a drowsy kind of state, so I wasn't really paying a whole lot of attention to the words coming out of his mouth.

There were only a few main things I took from the one sided conversation he was having with me. "Five more hours," "Out of State," "Stayin with a friend of mine," there were a few other things, but I doubt they even mattered.

"Oh, I almost forgot," He reached down in the floorboard by my feet and grabbed a brown paper bag. "Here, eat up."

I looked at him and then at the bag. I opened it with caution and was pleased to find a couple of donuts.

"Uh, thanks." I wasn't really hungry, but I wasn't going to let a couple of donuts go to waste, besides who knows when I'll get to eat again today.

      "Mmhm." he said.

The rest of the car ride wasn't very eventful. He did turn on the radio at one point, which was nice. Neither of us knew the words to the majority of the songs that played and he eventually just turned it off. All he did was drive, his eyes fixed on the road the entire time. We didn't really talk about anything, at least until I got bored and decided to break the ice.

"So, dad, how much longer exactly is it until we arrive to our final destination?" I said, keeping my head facing forward.

"Man, you're really into asking a bunch of questions, aren't you?"

      "What?"

"Nothing, nevermind." Did he just try to change the subject? What was going on with him? And seriously, where the hell are we? The only thing showing any sign of the rest of the population was a couple of cows a few miles back. Didn't see a house.
