A party. A party that I didn’t even want to be at but was dragged to by my friend, only to be abandoned probably four minutes in. I didn’t know anyone, it smelt of spilt booze and weed hugging the curtains and sofas, and I had no idea what to do with myself in such a foreign environment.
After absorbing my surroundings and taking it all in I pushed my way through the crowded room and to the kitchen, getting myself a drink. I mixed it with orange juice and cranberry juice because that was all they had. I basically diluted the whole thing so it was more juice with a few splashes of vodka, really. I probably shouldn't even be drinking much, anyways.
I pushed my way out of the slightly crowded room, careful not to spill my drink, and to the back door of the kitchen to get away from the whole people thing.
Whoever’s house this was had a small garden with a bench overlooking it, and it was a nice, quiet and peaceful area, out of the whole chaotic mess that was the party. Well, as quiet as it could be with the bass of terrible music thudding out of the house and flowing into the small area. The soft thuds were relaxing, though.
I sat for awhile just thinking and sipping at my drink occasionally, placing it on the ground when I decided I didn't want it anymore and scrolling through twitter out of boredom. Enjoying being, well, alone.
That is until someone sat down next to me, although I didn’t do anything about it. I didn’t mind it all too much.
"I hope you don't mind me out here.” The stranger said quietly, almost like he was reading my mind. I responded with a hum in response, shaking my head. I looked him up and down and saw he was smoking a joint. He noticed that I was looking at it and held it out in front of me, offering it to me.
“N- I’ve never smoked..” I said sheepishly, blushing embarrassedly. I wanted to say no, but I wanted to know what it was like. Ashley does it, I’ve just never really felt the want to. Now that this stranger was offering it, I wanted to try.
“You just, put it to your lips, and inhale like you’re sucking out of a straw, and swallow.” He demonstrated while I watched him in interest. “Then, all you need to do is exhale. There’s not much more to it than that.” He said, blowing out the smoke away from us as he talked.
“Really? It can’t be that easy, can it?” I asked in disbelief. I honestly thought that there was way more to it than that, it just seems way too easy.
“Depends on how you do it, I guess. So you wanna try? You don’t have to if you don't wanna.” He shrugged, extending his arm out to me again. I stared at his hand thoughtfully. What's the worst that could happen?
I took it, examining it in my hand for a few before bringing it up to my mouth.
I inhaled and did as he said. It tasted differently than I thought it would, you'd think it'd taste badly, but it really didn't.
And then,
I died.I had my temporary coughing fit for about thirty seconds and he just giggled at me the entire time, grabbing the glass that I had placed at my feet and offering it to me. I accepted it gratefully and internally sighed in content as the liquid soothed the irritation in my throat.
“You good?” He asked as I set my drink back down, his giggles softly dying and settling just for a smile.
“I didn’t expect it to burn that much, Jesus Christ.” I laughed at myself and cleared my throat because it still burned, but wasn't so bad anymore. He only smiled and offered me the joint again after he took another hit, gracefully, of course, unlike me. I agreed and got the hang of it (slightly) and we just talked for awhile and enjoyed each others presence, handing back and forth the joint till it was gone and all that was left was a roach.
