Ellie's POV
BANG! That's the sound of me furiously and fruitlessly kicking at the stupid ghostly-coloured door. "WHY?" I scream. "WHY DID YOU KILL HER?" Cole just looks sheepishly at the ground, as he drops the axe. "I'm going to kill you, you monster." Maddie snarls, tears streaming down her face. Rage courses through my veins, burning through every muscle as I grab the annoyingly perfect glass of water and hurl it with all my power at the pristine walls. It clatters noisily to the floor, drips of rain that look like tears flooding down the white backdrop into a puddle on the floor. "I am going to kill you, Cole. You stupid, selfish fool." Cole silently edges to the exit, walking down the never-ending corridor to a room out of my vision. Coward. But just before he reaches the door, something stops him short. I strain to get a look, jumping at the sound of a pained moan and hurried mutters, but I can't see or hear anything. Eventually, Alex steps over something and into view.
He immediately unlocks the closest door.
I stare at him flabbergasted, as he opens mine, until I realise that more than one person can betray others in one day. Cole lies almost peacefully on the floor, Alex's signature hot pink katana sticking out of his chest. "Well, you saved me the job." I mutter, but Maddie just glares at me. As he unlocks Lucy's door, I notice a small but familiar shape on the ground – my flamethrower! Just what I need, my helpful extension of an arm. Personally, I think I got the coolest Gift out of everyone. Although the scythe was pretty infamous.
Investigating more, I also locate the rest of our weapons, including Keira's sniper. I hesitate, unsure what to do. It is customary to leave them in the coffin with the deceased, but we aren't exactly following the law right at this moment, so I grab it along with the rest of them and sling it over my back. Passing Maddie her scythe, I see Lucy's befuddled look and realise that she has no idea what has happened because Cole shut her window. That will take a lot of explaining, and we don't have time. I hastily pull Cole's body into my room and yank the katana out, leaving a slowly expanding pool of coppery blood. I wipe it on his clothes, and speedily shut the door behind me.
"What is going on?" Lucy asks urgently, panic plain on her face. Ah. This is not going to help her PTSD. "Alex is helping us escape. Come on!" Grabbing her hand, I drag her towards the corridor, a shocked Maddie in tow. "This is not how I expected my day to go." I hear her mutter, and I almost smile. Once we reach the end of the never-ending corridor, it only takes an aggressive barge and the door swings wide open, spilling us into one of the most luxurious rooms I have ever seen. Fancy paintings adorn the red and black wood panelled walls, and plush red carpet swirls like blood beneath my feet. The contrast to the harsh white of the cells shocks me, and I involuntarily gasp at the opulence. Then Maddie is pushing me forward, and we continue the mad sprint to leave this place – and its ghosts – behind. We charge up the stairs, barging through doors like a stampede of angry elephants, until we reach... a ballroom? Lavish curtains hang lazily from the walls, and the room is filled with a calming, mellifluous melody that wraps itself around me and stops us in our tracks. But it isn't just the music stopping us. It's Felicity.
