Oreos are one of the most famous cookies in the world. But the idea for a sandwich cookie was not theirs.
There was a type of cookie called Hydrox that was introduced in 1908, It was the flagship product for Sunshine Biscuits. In 1912, National Biscuit launched the Oreo brand.
(Note: I guess Oreos were nearly identical to Hydrox, but with a different design on the cookie.)
National Biscuit, had a much superior distribution channel, advertising budget, and organization in general. Sunshine Biscuits and Hydrox had no chance to win over the market.
Hydrox lived on, although at a much smaller scale. Keebler later bought the brand and renamed it Keebler Droxies.
Have you had Hydrox or Droxies? Do you like them better than Oreos?
I'm not sure if I had Hydrox before, but I bet it's somehow healthier.
