A Love Like No Other

Prologue

Ebony's POV-13 years ago

"Ebony! Get your sorry hide down here this instant!"

Startled, I drop my copy of Anne of Green Gables on my bed and quickly run out of the room. "Coming dad!"

Practically tripping over my feet, I struggle to make it down the staircase in record time. Whenever dad is in this state, you definitely don't want to keep him waiting or you will definitely regret it.

Having made it down the stairs and into the front room, I find dad waiting by the front door with his arms crossed and a pissed expression on his face.

I have never seen him so angry in my life. You see, my mom died two months ago and things have been tough ever since. I haven't seen much of dad because he's always at work or he's drowning his sorrows in several bottles of Jack Daniels. School is finally out for the summer and I'm always left home alone so I spend a lot of time reading my mom's books and keeping up with the house.

"Why do you think you're entitled to waste my time?!" He shouts angrily as he comes close enough to yell in my face.

"I'm sorry dad. I didn't think you'd be home this early." I quietly say, really nervous at this point because he has never yelled at me like this before.

"You ungrateful brat!" He starts pacing in front of me. "How dare you speak to me like that! You don't get to be lazy in my house! I expect you to actually be useful for once in your life and yet I find that you're nothing but a disappointment just like your mother!"

My mouth drops open. Never has he talked to me this way or tried to ruin my mother's very image! How could he say that! Before I knew it, tears streamed down my face before I felt a hard slap. Oh my gosh! It hurts so bad, but it's like I'm paralyzed by my fear of upsetting him further. He just slapped me! He's never done this before!

"Don't you dare start crying or feeling sorry for yourself! You're worthless and I hate you!" He shouts at me before pushing me down to the ground and beating me. I was too scared to move. Never knowing what I should do. I can't fight him back because he's right, I am worthless. I don't serve a purpose, so I just take it until I begin to see dark patches and everything finally went black.

And that is when my whole world changed forever.
