It was the first day of camp.
Here goes a week of torture my parents signed me up for.
A week of a cabin full of girls sharing ONE bathroom.
A week of disgusting germs and animals in the lake.
A week of obnoxious boys pranking our cabin.
I have been here before, almost every year of my life in fact. And every year, it gets worse and worse. It was the summer before eighth grade, so this was my final year in a middle school cabin. My plan this year was to read and hide out in the bushes so I could avoid all the camp activities.
Now the actual camp grounds weren't that bad. I was always grossed o out with how filthy and annoying the cabins and people were. Every year there was always some type of drama with the girls. And I wasn't ready for this year.We all finally arrived at the camp grounds my parents forced me to come to.
"It'll be fun!" they said, "it's a learning opportunity!" they said. 🙄
It was always neither fun, nor knowledgeable. And this year couldn't be any different.
Could it?We all ran to our cabins to claim our bunks. Already the girls were arguing over which beds were theirs. I rolled my eyes and pushed my glasses back in place. I took an open bunk no one had claimed and laid all of my belongings on it. I grabbed my book right before the camp counselor blew her whistle and farted out of the cabin toward the nearest trees and bushes.
After a whole lot of scratches and bruises I was nicely nestled in the bushes and opened to the first page.
Just as I was about to turn the page, I heard a rustling in the bushes next to me. I thought this was it, I was going to either get caught, or eaten by a bear. I silently prayed for dear life as a saw a hand reach down for support and a pair of legs crawled in right next to me. I held my breath as this human crouched down in the bushes.
Then without warning, I tackled on top of him putting my hand over his mouth so he wouldn't scream and give our hiding place away.
"Tell me who you are and what you are doing here," I whispered.
He yanked my hand off of his mouth and quietly replied,
"I'm Eli. I'm hiding from the camp activities. Good lord, you have the hand strength of a gorilla, where did you learn to grasp like that? Anyway, who are you and what are you doing?"
"Oh uh.. I'm April. And I.. uhh... I'm hiding from the camp too..." I said as I tucked my blonde curls behind my ear and blushed.
We sat in silence and stared at each other for what seemed like forever. To break the silence, Eli said,
"Well I guess I better find a different bush. To give you your space."
"Oh no! It's ok... I kinda need someone to talk to. I think.." I stuttered.
He smiled and ran his fingers through his dark brown hair to put it back into a swoosh.
Suddenly we heard a whistle blown by the camp counselors which meant we needed to be back at our cabins.
We said our goodbyes and darted back to our cabins and I hoped I would see him tomorrow.
