The sound of quills filled the silent hall. Marcus drank in the silence. It was a rare treat in the school. On any given day, it would sound like a market. Sunlight came through the glassless window and candle light also served to illuminate the room. It was the mid term exam that the servs were taking. The time was to be recorded with either an hour glass or a sundial.
"That would be it" without a word, Marcus drew the air in the room towards him, pulling all twenty-three papers into his grasp. The class erupted into noise as the students resumed talking with one another as they would another day. Skimming the papers showed a host of answers some wrong and some questions not even attempted. They will make it up in the practical, he consoled himself as he placed the papers into the draw.
"Line up, please" Usually this instruction was met with a huddled mass or a rush to the door, but they still had on their necklaces. The Servs had no uniform in their school but for this exam all of them wore a leather strap. It was woven but had not gems or metal. In truth it was more like a dog collar, but the magi decided necklace sounded more humane.
Each student in their own way, tested them magics once they got it back, some harnessed air others water, the weaker ones just accepted that what little power they had, returned to them and made no attempt to flex their might. There would be a practical exam in the afternoon, provided no one got out of control, he could mark them highly.
The Collars were placed into a wooden box for return to the principal 's office, despite the school being divided for servs and magi both faculty reported to the principal. The box levitated behind him as he made his way to the interior hall.
"Sir, you would not guess what."
"I don't care"
His response came apathic ally as it usually did. Despite being teenagers, they often gossiped and felt the need to spread whatever news of the day they received through the school. Thegirl who approached him wore a wide smile and her hair woven into an odd-looking tower. She did not usually spread rumors, but it was best not to encourage them.
Fortunately, he had come to a wall with a circle pattern. These locks only opened to a person of a certain level of magical ability. The school was filled with such passages it was meant only for use by the teachers but anyone with enough power could open them. The council infect celebrated it as a way to test students for extra perks. All it really meant was that Magi could come and go but the servs would be stuck. Before the girl could respond to him, Marcus threw the box into the darkness and followed it.
She tried as she often did in her spare time, the girl placed her hand onto the circle and tried to charge it open. Usually it would take her and two other classmates to open it. She hoped that he could tell her about the weird wand, that Salis had used. Very little was known about the Human world and it was illegal to teach it in school, but it was an unspoken truth, Mr. Bernard use to live in the human world.
"Not good" He thought to himself as he saw three women standing before him. It would not be unlikely to see two or one of them here, but the collection had a grim expression as he walked into the marble decorated room of the Principal 's office.
"Marcus, we have been expecting you" The one speaking was a woman that looked no taller than four foot five. She had dark hair and similar eyes.
"I was worried about that" he responded to the principal as they were a gathered on the other side of the desk. Reading the faces, he could tell that the principal was trying to seem neutral, The Head of the Servs department seems to be holding back tears and the head of the Magi department had her usually dagger like stare.
