The Ocean Between Us

Outside these walls

{Reader's P.O.V}
"I'm going outside mom!" Sheen yelled, next to the front door.
"Alright, be safe, do not go over the abyss and do not under ANY circumstances leave the kingdom, or else..." his mother answered.
"I know, I know! Bye!"
Sheen swam out the door. It had been a rough day. His parents were always trying to make him a perfect little merboy- well mostly his father. But that was not what sheen wanted. Of course, at some point he would be the ruler of Brittle Star Abyss, and that was a big duty, but it wasn't soon! Sure, his prince/King classes would start in a year, but for now why couldn't he just be careless? He wanted to see the world outside the kingdom. He never got out of the kingdom. He did go over the abyss, it was nothing really. He learned that there were other kingdoms, which he would cooperate with once King. For now, all he could do was flip his fins around the kingdom.
"Swim left, swim right, where to go next? Up and down, round and round..." he quietly sang to himself.
He was swimming backwards, but suddenly hit a wall- the kingdom's wall.
"Time to turn around..." he thought.
He hesitated a second. It was a perfect opportunity for him. He could just swim over the coral bricks. He looked up. The wall was about two meters tall. He began to swim upwards, the faint light of the sun reaching the bottom of sea blinding him. Almost at the top, he stopped.
"This isn't right." He tried to convince himself.
It was one of these angel-demons situations. His parents always restrained him from seeing the world outside these walls, which wasn't very fair. But what if they had a good reason? Is the world behind these walls that dangerous?
A brittle star landed on his head. He gently grabbed it and put it in front of him, and let out a sigh.
"What should I do, little star?" He let the star go.
It swam up and over the wall, while Sheen stared.
"You're right."
He quickly swam up. Once at the edge of the wall, he stopped. He looked left and right, checking for danger. He flipped his fins until he was on the other side. What he saw was just incredible! Corals and seaweeds everywhere! Plenary of fish he never saw before! It was like he wasn't in the same world anymore.
{Sheen's P.O.V}
It was the first time I saw what was behind the tall walls I couldn't cross. It was magical, I wasn't in the same place. I looked behind me, only to see Brittle Star Abyss's tall walls, and the top of the castle I live in. Now, I have to make sure I don't get lost. I'll only swim forward. I've learned in class that if you swim forward once leaving the north wall, like I did, you'll find other kingdoms! Brittle Star Abyss was the last of the line, and just before, there was Pearl Waves. Maybe I could swim until Pearl waves, explore the city a little bit, and then come back. I can't stay there past midnight. I'll make sure I get home before the sea goes as dark as it can get.
I turned around at an 180° angle, and flipped my fin as quick as possible. I want the most time possible to explore after all!
{Reader's P.O.V}
After around 15 minutes of traveling, Sheen finally saw the walls of Pearl Waves. He swam over the wall, making sure nobody saw him cross. Once inside, he swam around in the streets and residences, coming across shops and markets every now and then. Everybody looked busy, getting fancy clothing and masks. He stopped by a lady who was looking at a yellow and orange dress, with jewels on it.
"Pardon me mademoiselle, why is everyone looking for fancy clothing today? Is there an event?" He asked the blonde woman.
"Why yes, there is. The castle is holding a masquerade tonight, and everyone is invited!" She answered.
"A masquerade huh?" He looked at the yellow dress, the switched to the blue one next to it. "Well, I think the blue dress would look better on you. It would match your eyes." He gave her a little wink then started to swim away.
"Maybe I could go... I just need a mask after all." He thought.
He stopped by the first shop with masks, and took a salmon pink one. He then continued exploring until the time for the ball arrived.
{Sheen's P.O.V}
Heading towards the big coral gates of the castle, I saw old friends of mine, Charlotte and Zin. They don't live in any kingdoms anymore, but they come in from times to times to event. I didn't know they came to Pearl Waves's events too. I can't let them see me, they know I'm not allowed out. And they are the kind that will tell everyone, and so my parents will end up knowing, which will get me in trouble.
I put on my mask and entered the ball room. I saw the King and Queen on their thrones. There was a third, empty purple throne. The next ruler I imagine.
I turn around and my eyes end up on the buffet. I can't see everything, but I see plenty of pastries! I head over and take a few.
Time to look around. I see crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, and walls covered with pearls.
"Ugh-" was the sound I made when a girl bumped into me.
The end of her pigtails was shiny and purple. Her scales and fins were purple.
"Ah- pardon me sir, i should've been more careful." She said.
I looked up at her brown eyes, and noticed the crown of shells and corals over her head. I guess she's the next queen then.
"It's my fault, for standing in the middle of the way."
She inspected from fins to head. Her eyes spent a little more time on the crown then the rest.
"You aren't from around here are you?"
The brunette stared in my eyes, so intensely it made me nervous.
"Um- what makes you say that?" I reply.
"Your crown of course. The only people allowed to have crowns are royalty, and you aren't in my family." she said as she swam up a little to have a better look at my crown.
"You're right, I'm from the kingdom next door."
Her look went back into mine.
"You're allowed to go out-"
"No I'm not. I just decided to. I'm tired of the inside."
She sighed.
"Of course you can't go outside. No king nor queen let their children outside the walls."
I looked at the back of her head as she turned.
"Wait."
