All of us girls stood in one line, waiting for Ian to tell us what decision he'd come to. Everyone was on edge, as he hadn't really let on who he was going to choose. I, of course, thought the odds were in my favour.
Ian got up from his seat to stand right in front of us. He took a deep breath and started speaking. "I hardly got any sleep last night, thinking about who I'd choose. You are all wonderful women."
Couldn't he just say who he chose? I wanted to get this over with.
"I thought I knew who I was going to go with, but that game of truth or dare changed things. The person I would like to couple up with..."
I held my breath.
"...is Liza."
My heart dropped. How had I not seen this coming? Biggest regret my ass. Liza walked up to Ian and kissed him on the cheek. She whispered something to him, but I couldn't make out what she said. The rest of us returned to our partners.
"Oh, thank god," Martin sighed and enveloped me in his arms when I returned to him. "I really thought he was going to take you."
I laughed dryly. "Why would he? We barely talked."
"So what are we doing now?" Martin asked.
I shrugged. I didn't really feel like doing anything but hiding under a blanket.
Jennifer and Lucas walked up to us. "You guys want to play pool volleyball with us? We kinda don't want to play alone."
Martin looked at me quizzically and I, once again, shrugged. "Fine by me."
We went down to the pool to play. My mood lightened as we played. The first three rounds were couple against couple. Martin and I kept winning.
"That's not fair. Martin's too good," Lucas groaned.
Jennifer chuckled. "Maybe we should switch it up then?"
"Fine by me," I laughed. "We're going to destroy you."
I knew that wasn't all that realistic. After all, I was pretty shit at sports in general. Especially if it involved balls.
Jennifer and Martin switched places.
"Let's murder their egos," Jennifer said as we started to play again.
She wasn't half bad without Lucas to drag her down. I may not have been too much of a help, but I wasn't completely terrible, either. In the end, we won.
"Maybe it wasn't me, after all. Maybe you're just really terrible," Martin chuckled.
Lucas crossed his arms. "Oh yeah? Maybe we should play against each other. Just the two of us."
"If you want to get destroyed again."
Jennifer and I chuckled. "I think we better let them work this out," she said and swam to the pool ladder.
I followed her and we sat down on the edge, letting our feet dangle in the water as we watched our men battle it out.
"So, Liza must be happy," Jennifer said after a little while.
I raised an eyebrow.
"Well, she really hit it off with that Ian guy. And, you know, Nikolai really wasn't her type."
Looking over at the two of them sitting on the garden swing, I said, "I suppose so."
Jennifer eyed me quizzically. "You're not jealous, are you? I mean, Martin is quite the catch."
"What? No. Why would I be? I hardly ever talked to Ian."
"Mh-h. Sure. I heard you two had a talk this morning. Plus, he kept looking at you during the game," she said. "Frankly, I expected him to choose you."
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, well, I'm glad he didn't. I'll be much happier with Martin."
Out of the corner of my eye, I looked at Ian and Liza again. I could've sworn Ian was looking at me, too.
