It’s around midnight and you go to see if Piper went to bed on time but of course you open her door to see her empty bed with her unmade sheets thrown everywhere. Piper is definitely most like her father when it comes to making the bed, it just doesn't happen. You shake your head with a smile while closing her door you head into the kitchen as you need to finish cleaning up the dishes from dinner. As you go head that direction, you hear a movie playing from the family room so you decide to quickly peek in, seeing Piper perched up in Michael's lap in her rockstar PJ’s on. You then see Michael's arm wrap around her moments later, Piper snuggling into his embrace, making you smile widely to yourself. He’s so good with her and you know that you are so lucky that someone like Michael gets to be her dad. Piper looks up at her dad and smiles, Michael poking the tip of her nose and she giggles, hiding in his chest which causes a big grin to appear on Michael's face.
“Hey daddy?” Piper asks into Michael's chest before looking up at him with her somewhat toothless smile, Michael smiling right back at her.
“Yeah sweetheart?” He asks, attempting to start braiding her hair into pigtails like you two do every night for her before we all go to bed. She doesn’t like it any other way.
“What’s a soulmate?” She asks, seeming pretty curious. Michael pulls her closer to him as he looks up at the movie.
“Well Piper, let me think about how to explain this.” Michael says, furrowing his brow as he thinks, making Piper giggle to herself. “I think the best way I could explain what a soul mate is it’s like a best friend but more.” He says, looking down at her, Piper is still looking up at him with her innocent eyes which basically tells him to keep explaining so you lean against the wall in the hallway, listening in yourself to hear what else he has to say. “A soulmate is that one person who knows you better than anyone else. It’s someone who makes you a better person. Wait, actually, scratch that. They don’t make you a better person. You do that yourself.” He says, letting out a small chuckle and Piper joins in with her joyful giggle. “Do you want to know why?” Michael nods and Piper nods quickly, making me laugh to myself. “Because they inspire you.” He says. “I mean, a soulmate is someone you carry with you forever.” Michael adds, every single word he says making your heart race. You've always loved how much he gets into things. That’s one of the reasons you fell so hard for him.
“So kinda like my teddy bear Billie?” Piper asks, smiling wide and Michael laughs,
“Yeah, kinda like Billie.” He says, some silence filling the air for a couple of seconds.
“Tell me more daddy!” Piper whines, a wide smile appearing on Michael’s face.
“Alright alright. No more interruptions though. Okay?” He says, pecking her cheek and she giggles, nodding as she wiggles around in his arms, making you sigh of happiness as you watch both of them together. Before Michael starts explaining once more, he takes a deep breath in and he exhales. “A soulmate is also someone who knew you, accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did. Or when no one else would. And no matter what happens, you will always love them. Nothing can ever change that.” He says, looking down at Piper and taking her hand, holding it in his and Piper looks up at him, cuddling in as close as she can.
“Was mommy your soul mate daddy?” Piper asks quietly, seeming a little shy about asking the question but she still has the guts to look up at him, your heart aching as you see Michael’s guard that he’s built up for so long collapse before you. Michael takes in a small shaky breath, attempting to stay strong in front of Piper. Piper was only four when you passed so she didn’t end up getting to know you very well but now that she's six, she knows that you were her mother. You always think about if there was something you couldn've done so you would of stayed there with them and had the famil you always wanted, even if it was just for a day. You'd give the whole world as you never got to say goodbye.
“She was. She was most definitely was daddy’s soul mate but I want you to know this, okay? Mommy will always be daddy’s soul mate, no matter what happens.” Michael says with a small smile, Piper spinning around in his lap and kissing his cheek sweetly before giving him one of her huge hugs.
“I love you daddy and just so you know, you're allowed to cry, You let me.” Piper says to him, rubbing his back in a caring manner and he hugs her nice and tight yet again.
“I love you too sweetheart. Thank you for being daddy’s strong little girl. Mommy would be so proud.” He says, kissing her cheek again and again, making her smile wide. Michael’s right. You're s proud of your baby girl and you hope Michael knows that he was your soul mate too. You will always be. No matter where you are, even if it's not there with him.
