CHAPTER 2
Everyone acted different around Jaclin after they found out Jason had died. Some people gave her endless hugs, while others kept saying, "I'm so sorry." Family and friends alike kept offering to help her out if "you need anything at all," but what she needed the most, was a friend. She hated it when people said things like, "I understand," because how could they really understand how she felt? There was a huge hole in her heart where Jason used to be, and nothing anyone could say could convince her that they knew what she was going through.
Meanwhile, Kassa-Leigh was being quiet. She wasn't her usual, bubbly self, and Jaclin often found her staring of into space. She didn't make her go back to school since there was only a week left before summer break.
Jaclin's sister, Meghan, came to stay with them, almost immediately after hearing the news. The two sisters had a strange relationship. They often fought, but they also knew that when one was hurting, the other would be there. So, when Meghan showed up at their door, Jaclin collapsed into her arms.
Meghan was four years younger. At twenty-six, she looked nothing like her sister. While Jaclin was tall and slender, with dark hair, Meghan was short, plump and blonde. They had different personalities as well. Jaclin was shy, and a girly girl, while Meghan was outgoing and very much a tomboy. Growing up, it was hard to believe that they were even sisters.
Meghan made some coffee, and brought a cup to the grieving woman. "Thanks," Jalcin said, smiling. She took a small sip, allowing the hot liquid to soothe her raw throat.
Meghan sat down beside her. "Where's Kas?"
"Upstairs. In her room, probably. She doesn't come out much these days."
Meghan nodded. "I know it's hard, Jaci, but you need to be strong for that little girl of yours. She needs you more than ever now."
Jaclin looked up at her sister. She knew it was true, but she didn't know how to handle it all, and she didn't know how to tell Meghan that. Finally, after a moment of silence, she looked down at her coffee, and said, "I know, Megi. I just don't know what to say to her. I feel utterly helpless."
Meghan reached over and gently took hold of her hand. "You need to let her grieve with you."
She nodded, still staring into her mug. "How do I do that?" There was another moment of silence, as Meghan tried to come up with an answer to that.
Finally, she sighed. "I don't know," she said.
Upstairs, Kassa-Leigh didn't even know her favourite aunt was in the house, yet. She lay in her bed, staring up at the ceiling. She had taken to praying. She knew her daddy believed in God, and he often prayed to Him, but she never really felt it necessary, until now. She had been asking God to give her daddy a big hug and to tell him she missed him, when she felt the need to finally tell Him what she thought of Him.
"God?" she began, her eyes closed tight. "I don't understand why you took my daddy away from me. Don't you know that I need him?" She bit her bottom lip, then continued. "I don't know how I'm supposed to live without a daddy. Daddy always said that you can do anything, so I wanna ask you to bring my daddy back to me and my Mommy. I won't be mad at you, if you only return him. No questions asked," she said, remembering the quote from a television show. "Thank you." She opened her eyes and waited, holding her breath. She knew that if she just believed, God would do this for her. She knew that He was going to do it. Her teacher had told her last year, that if she would only believe, anything could happen. "I believe," she whispered. "I believe."
