About a week later, Xiao Tong went to the same cafe to quickly grab an iced caramel macchiato. As she pulled open the door to walk into the shop, the smell of coffee and cream hit her nose creating an aroma of coziness. She walked to the counter already knowing what she was going to order on the tip of her tongue. As she had opened her mouth and right about to order, another customer stood at the counter next to hers, about to order; her eyes met his. Xiao Tong froze, in blind shock after seeing the boy again, but this time at a cafe.
Looking at the boy's facial expression, it seemed like he was partially confused as of why the customer stopped, but also because he had seemed to recognize her but couldn't put where he knew her. After a few seconds, Xiao Tong resumed back to ordering her caramel macchiato. "I'd like a caramel macchiato with extra cream and sugar," said Xiao Tong glancing down at the logo printed on the boy's laptop he was carrying. "UNIQ" (whooops haha) it read. Xiao Tong didn't have to confidence to ask for his business card, even though this strange boy seemed so close and warm-hearted.
"Thank you for your purchase. Your total will be $4.50." said the cashier. Although the cashier had told Xiao Tong her order total, she couldn't quite hear him. It almost seemed as if something was coming back to her. Just as she was about to recall something about her forgotten past, she was interrupted by a "hello?" from the even more confused barista. Xiao Tong's memory had been put out of her mind again. "Oh, sorry." Xiao Tong replied, her voice trailing off as she handed him a five dollar bill. Without another word or thank you, Xiao Tong walked to the other end of the counter to wait for her drink.
Again, she tried to recall the memory but his time nothing came to her. Him interrupting her thinking must have made the memory vanish. After she was frantically trying to fish for the once lured thought, a worker yelled, "I have a grande caramel macchiato with extra cream and sugar!," loud enough to snap her out of her contemplation. When she grabbed the caramel macchiato, her fingers touched with a hand.
As she peered behind her, she said "Excuse me, this macchiato is m-" but their eyes met once again. Turns out the boy also ordered the same exact drink! Xiao Tong couldn't decide whether this boy was cold, and unmannerly, or simply nice. The warmth of his hand that met Xiao Tong's cold fingers gave Xiao Tong a small tingle in her heart. With her hands bringing up the cup, she took a sip of the macchiato while her heart seemed to warm from the touch. As she exited the shop, she realized she knew him. She didn't know from what or when, but she just knew that they had met before,,,perhaps years ago...
