Imagine it’s June 20th, 2009 and you’ve just come off a trial as a juror where you were sequestered for the last four and a half months because it was a high profile criminal case that was moved upstate.  You were not allowed to see your husband, your children, anyone.  You were not allowed to read the papers or watch TV.  If you needed to go anywhere in the hotel, you were escorted by a U.S. Marshall or bailiff.  Each time you called your husband, the U.S. Marshall, bailiff or another court appointed individual listened in on your conversation with him.

Right now you’re worried.  You have not been able to talk to Michael in three days.  Each time you tried, his children, now your children as well, told you he was sleeping.  You know his preparation for this Tour is requiring him to get as much sleep as he can so you told them not to wake him.  Today they told you he was meeting with some people from the Tour, but your daughter alluded to something not being right with Daddy.  She told you Daddy was always talking and that he was walking a little funny.  You call Kay, his make-up artist.

“Hi, Kay.  It’s me.  What’s going on with Michael?”

“When’s the last time you spoke to him?”

“Three days ago.  He said he was fine.  The kids tell me he’s sleeping when I call and now they say he’s meeting with the promoter but that something is wrong with him.”

“He’s not fine.  He hasn’t been fine.  Do you know when you’re coming home?”

“The trial just ended.  I’m on my way to the airport.  They escorted me out in secret because of who my husband is so I could avoid the press.”

“When is your plane landing?”

“I should be arriving around four.”

“You need to step in and take control.  He’s told you what he’s done on his past Tours?”

“Yes.”

“He’s been doing that for the last month.”

“Damn it.  Is he giving him anything else?”

“I don’t know, but something’s not right.  I think he’s being pressured.  They’ve taken away his control over everything, including how I do his hair and make-up.  He’s lost a lot of weight.  He’s always shivering and he’s cold to the touch.  He needs to be hospitalized.  He can’t make it through one song and he’s constantly talking to himself.  I think he’s scared right now.”

“Frig!  This would not have happened if I was there!  Kay, I was denied everything I tried to get out of this case.  Now look what happened.  I have to go, they just called my flight.  If you talk to Michael, don’t let him know I’m on my way.  I don’t want Murphy to find out I’m coming home.  Is he scheduled to rehearse tonight?”

“Eleven o’clock.”

“He won’t be.  Can you pick me up at the airport?  I need to learn more about what’s been going on.”

“Sure.”  You give Kay your flight information then board the plane.
