The only relief she felt was up here. The girl gasped as she watched her shoe fall from the roof of her 8 story apartment building. She expected it to just hit the ground but watched on horror as it hit a passerby.
The man nearly fell at the unexpected hit to his head. Dazed, he looked to see what had hit him, the shoe, then to see where it came from and saw a young girl standing on the roof.
"Hey!"
"Sorry" she called down.
The kind man grabbed her shoe and hollered up, "wait right there!"
The girl hopped down to the balcony, her heart pounding wildly, not sure what to do. If she waited there as instructed surely she would get an earful. If she left she could avoid that man, but face him again one day, and risk her parents finding out.
Before she could make her decision the door leading to the balcony flew open and the man stepped forward.
The girl mumbled, "I'm so sorry."
The man sighed, "sit down" gesturing toward the ledge. The girl did as she was told, to afraid to question his orders. She kept apologizing repeatedly as the man came closer to her as she shook like a leaf.
She almost shrieked as the man knelt down in front her and lifted her right leg.
"W-what are you doing?" The girl asked as the man replaced her fallen shoe.
Still kneeling, the man looked up, his handsome face showing. "It's a man's job to return a lost shoe to a lady." "Th-thank you" she replied as rose blossoms formed on her cheeks.
A smile tugged at the man's lips. "No need to thank me."
The girl started to question "wha-?" as the man placed to large hands on her shoulders but was cut short as there was a violent shove to her pushing her backwards.
Down she fell, a scream forming in her throat. The last thing she saw as she hit the ice hard ground was the man's retreating back.
