Cold stung her cheeks as she walked down the cold streets of bulmerry, she was leaving, finally and not because anyone gave her he permission to, but because she had gathered up all her saved up courage and packed her bags. She walked very fast as the harsh wind slashed her eyes, her eyes became wet and tears
threatened to fall, but she wont let it she had never let it fall why now would she allow it to.

The tears that came were not from the harsh wind, but from the fear that consumed her that he was following her behind, that he was waiting for her to heave a sigh of relief before he made his move and put an end to her new found hope. She held onto the straps of her back pack a little tighter, the bag that contained little she owned and the little money she had stolen from him.

The road was not too dark because of the street lights and the rising morning sun as she sighted the bus bench and prayed the bus wont take time to arrive. And it seemed the heavens were on her side today as she heard the slowing tires of the first morning bus arriving. As soon as the doors opened she got in being the first and only passenger she paid with coins being as she never went anywhere so she had no metro card and he moved.

Alycia parker sat at the back seat of the bus and refused to look back, she had not planned her escape she had just had enough. The memories of last nights events came flooding back once again and she found herself seating on the stairs in the cold at night and waited for her uncle Linus parker to come home, had told her never to put on the lights in the house when he was not home or the heater that he would never pay bills to make her comfortable but since they lived in the same house he had to but he would never let her enjoy it.

So there she was in the front porch waiting for him or rather the person who would bring home her once again drunk uncle from the bar or sleeping out on a cold bench. Everyone in the town seemed to care about each other or be in each others business, but no one seemed to care to stop what was going on in the house although they had a pretty good idea. It was like they all conspired and decided not to care but Alycia did not mind because she did not expect much from them.

She saw a taxi drive up to the drive way and as she waited for him to be brought out by someone, no one came out first and after a few seconds she stood and watched him get out of the taxi alone and half sober, and she knew she faced another misery. Linus had a pattern not particular but clear, if he comes home very drunk and Alycia was not anywhere in sight, there would be a beating if he came back sober and she was in sight she would get a beating. So she got hit almost every other day.

Alycia stood wide eyed in front of the house as he stealthy approached her as the taxi left, never taking his eye of her like a prey looking for escape she backed away slowly. He reached her and walked past her, Alycia stood shaking in fear still looking straight at where he had been just seconds ago. She heaved a sigh of relief, her relief did not last long when she heard her name

"Lycia" the way he always called it whenever there was pending doom.

"Yes uncle" she slowly turned around to face him.

''Why dont you come into the house'' he made a hand gesture indicating she go into the house

She knew what awaited her inside the house and she knew there was no escape, even if she decided not to go into the house she was sure he would still do what he wanted to do outside because the neighbours did not care or did not dare to care.

The bus stopped at its last bus stop drawing her out of her thoughts. She came out and stood looking round for a while because she did not know where she was going or wanted to go. She had finally escaped. but this was a whole new set of problems for her because she knew nothing about the world or how it worked. She had read in some books that where left on her parents shelf and it talked about facilities that took in and sheltered homeless people but she did not know its locations. all she knew was she had entered a bus from bulmerry town and she was now in tumser town.

These new problems she faced she had to conquer, because going back to the place which she had stayed and could not even call a home was not an option. She started walking lost somewhere in her mind that she did not know she walked and walked until the scent of food from a restaurant she had just walked by jerked her out of her senses. Then she noticed people that strolled pass, some bumping into her, she had never really been in the midst of a lot of people so this was a new experience for her and she suddenly realized she was not scared so she kept walking.

It was very late when she finally found a homeless shelter after asking around and losing her way a couple of times. she felt like she had roamed the whole streets of south Carolina. as she got in she registered and was told to find any free bed and feel at home, she scuffed to her self 'home?' as if that was even remotely possible. she found a free bed in between two occupied ones, to the left was occupied by a mother who held her child so tight she wondered if the child was even breathing while to the right was occupied by a person she assumed to be a man.

she sat down hugging her bag very tight to her chest and fighting back tears, the world seemed so alien to her and for the first time she wondered if she did the right thing leaving. sleep was catching up with her and she lay down curled up still holding unto her bag as her stomach grumbled from hunger. she her decided to save the few edibles she grabbed from the house for another time because she had had some of it today while walking around the streets of south Carolina so she was sure she would not die of hunger. even with the hunger and fear of being in an unfamiliar environment sleep still came easily to her and she was glad about that, at least the hunger will be forgotten.
