Walls and Water

I was racing down the dark alleyway when I saw the wall. My heart was thumping, if I didn't get out of here I was going to die.

I looked behind me and saw my pursuer a few feet behind me, probably seeing as well as a bat. I had two options. Stay here or climb the wall. I wasn't very good at climbing but I needed to live and not be killed or tortured by this person.

I started climbing.

So did the pursuer.

I was half way up the wall when he caught my leg.

I tried to kick back but I couldn't.

I felt a sharp pain in my leg, and I realised he had cut me.

I shook off his grip and kept climbing. I was at the top when he grabbed me again, stronger this time.

Using all my strength I managed to pull myself on to the wall.

He changed tactics and pushed me.

I shrieked and threw my arm out at the last second, Neely dislocating my elbow from the force.

Gravity was pulling me down and I was weaker then before.

My leg was paining.

Let go. You will survive

My gut was saying.

I was having a battle in my head when suddenly my choice was made for me.

The man stomped on my finger and I shrieked, letting go.

I screamed all the way down and thankfully at the last second I took a deep breath.

I crashed into the river.

Now I had to swim.

I went cold with fear.

I couldn't.

I couldn't swim and I was stuck in a lake.

<<<><><>>>><

I had to survive.

I had to.

I knew the basics of swimming, kinda.

Don't judge.

When you've moved from safe house to safe house for the past nine years about 12 times every year and you are being tracked by an evil organisation learning to swimming isn't exactly top of the list of things to learn before you turn 15.

I started kicking my legs upwards trying to get to the surface.

I broke the surface with relief and took a breath.

I sunk back under quickly.

I tried kicking up again, but my leg was caught in something.

I panicked.

I started kicking and squirming but my ankle was caught probably, I realised, between two stones.

I saw a dark shadow come towards me but I was weak from lack of of oxygen to be able to stop him or her.

I tried a weak kick but it was no use.

She saw me and tugged at a rope.

Someone else came down - a boy

and helped her disentangle my leg.

I had black spots at the edges of my vision and my lungs were burning.

I accidentally took a breath my

lungs were instantly filled with dirty river water I coughed and spluttered and I ended sucking in more water.

I was dying.

My head was pounding and my feet were numb.

My vision was blurry and ears were filled with the sound of laughter, from a fair when I was five- my happiest memory.

I let the darkness over power me.

And I began to float upwards to an orange light that looked like a sunrise.

Then I broke the surface of the water coughing and spluttering and saw the most beautiful sunrise that New York has ever seen.
