“Did I pack everything?” I mumble to myself as I try to block out the banging on my door. I only have 30 minutes until I leave to go to the airport. I have dad on the other side saying, “I need your bags Maya now or you’re going to be late!” Always the drama queen, I have been ready for this for weeks. Can’t he trust me to have everything packed? “Crap.” I mumble as I go over to my dresser and grab my passport. “That’s kind of important.” My mom says as she sneaks into my room with a big smile on her face. I don’t know who is more excited about me leaving for this trip, my mom or me. After all when I got my passport in the mail she opened the manila envelope and started crying saying, “This is only your first adventure of the rest of your life.”
After I calm my mom and tell her I will Skype her once a week on Sundays she calms down enough to walk over to me and stroke my hair while saying, “Maya I just know this is one of those big moments in your life, you won’t be the same when you come back -in a good way. Now go your father is ready to leave.”
I turn around after my mom leaves the room and get one last glance around. I have been dreaming of leaving and going to London for years in this room. Now it’s about to happen. I pick up my bags and sigh. “This is it.” I whisper to myself as I close the door and walk downstairs to put the bags in the car and arrive at the airport.
After a grueling 20 minutes with my dad driving the car and giving me “tips” on how to be safe while traveling I turn to him and just look him straight in the eye and say, “Dad, I am going to be fine. I’ll miss you.” We turned and arrived at the arrivals gate. He parked the car and coughed a little to compose as he turns to me and say, “Maya I’m going to miss you too. Have a wonderful trip.” He then got out of the car and helped me with my bags. He hugged me goodbye and kissed the top of my forehead. I turned around and walked with my suitcase to the check-in counter for British Airways. I turn around and wave one last time as I see my dad still standing there watching me check in. The lady at the check-in desk asks for my flight number and I give her the paper that has all of my information for the ticket on it. She asks, “Is this your first time flying abroad?” I just nod. She takes my luggage and I head to the right terminal.
This is a lot of firsts. I am traveling by myself. I am flying by myself. This is all so new and exciting. I get to my terminal and sit down. As I sit down I just start to let my thoughts wander into the fantasyland I have created in my head of what living in London will be like. I have been preparing for this trip for a while. I have read multiple guidebooks and learned some common English slang but none of this will prepare me for what is going to happen during my time in England.
I hear, “All business class passengers may board now.” I get up and sling my backpack over my shoulder as I walk over to the counter to hand my ticket to the man standing and checking them. He says, “Have a safe flight”. I just smile and say thanks. Walking onto the plane I feel the whole new feeling of excitement and nervousness. It’s actually happening I think to myself as I find my seat.
After 8 hours on the plane I hear the flight attendant say in the microphone, “Thank you for flying British Airways. We are now about to land. Welcome to London England.”
After we land I get up to grab my bag from the overhead compartment. I’m in London! I board off the plane ready to explore and find myself in the streets of London. I’m meant to be here. It’s fate.
